I'm at the beginning of the path to becoming a 13Lima. I enlisted back in June on 'for commissioning' contract and am currently drilling with my ANG unit before commissioning school the fall and (I hope) tech school thereafter.

Mainly here to learn from the great and inspiring stories of the other members, but I may occasionally comment on what the process is like from the point of view of a new non-prior service member of the the ANG.

Thank you all.

@SWOT, I'm in the New York ANG.

The 'for commissioning' contract means that I'm an A1C until leaving for commissioning school (AMS in my case), which may be some months. All of our 13Lima candidates with no prior service have this status.

The big advantage is that we're able to participate in the ASOS's 'level 1 program' which prepares 1C4 and 13Lima candidates for the Schoolhouse while we wait for a class date. Also, if someone with that contract fails out of AMS, we can separate from the military. I'll admit I have no idea if these are unique to Reserve/Guard or exist in AD as well.

Best,

The 1-Level program is unique to the Guard. AD has no system in place for 1C4/13L wannabes to train up prior to the Prep Course.
