Saw something on t.v. tonight that I don't ever recall seeing before...s commercial for the Air Force Academy.

Here's the spot:

I was kind of surprised.

Our service academies are among the most competitive and prestigious schools in the country. I've never thought of them as needing t.v. commercials to attract talent.

Have they (or the others) advertised previously and I just never noticed or perhaps times have simply changed? Maybe @Marauder06 has some insight?

All of the Academies recruit and market aggressively. Just like with SOF, the best recruits have lots of options. So you have to go out and get them.

The times, they are a'changin'.... they recruit the same academic pool as the Ivy's, upper-tier schools, so they have to keep up with the times. I understand all the academies market aggressively in social media as well.

That's correct. Several of my students got accepted by Ivies as well as other top schools in the US. The Academies are under constant pressure to "look like America" so they have to try a bunch of different tactics to appeal to all of those demographics.

There was actually some talk about making West Point a dry campus for cadets while I was teaching there. I don't think it got much further than the "initial discussion" phase.

Thanks all! I've known a couple ALO's but was always under the impression recruiting was a bit more "targeted"; as opposed to a primetime commercial for the masses. Clearly, I'm not part of the target market.
