Airlines, airplanes and other kerfuffles

Back in my day which isn't that long ago...uncontrolled airports were grass or dirt...but apparently Pima County and Marana have been tossing money at that place for awhile.

Yeah, I can think of one in Florida that's been paved since WWII and doesn't have a tower despite repeated petitioning from local pilots and businesses. Their daily air traffic in light aircraft is staggering.

Re: my earlier comment, by far, the majority of airports are uncontrolled...like 10x as many as controlled airports. Even at that, many airports with towers are only part time. The point is, they're not at all unusual -- quite the opposite.

As @TLDR20 indicated, some of these can be very busy with general aviation traffic. It's up to the pilots to communicate with each other and scan for traffic.

In this case, a high-wing and low-wing aircraft unfortunately connected. I have no idea about the particulars of this accident, but this is kind of a "classic" accident scenario. Traffic from above may be obstructed to the pilot of the high wing, while traffic underneath may be obscured to the pilot of the low wing. I wouldn't be surprised if that's determine d to be a factor in this accident.

Yeah so…

Before anyone else posts the alleged name, age, sex, and flying experience of the Delta pilot in Canada, please cite a source other than literally the Pakistan Express.

For fucks sake.
Delta released info according to these sources:

Delta releases information about crew aboard flight that crashed, flipped in Toronto

Officials say the captain was hired by Mesaba Airlines in October 2007, which merged with Pinnacle Airlines in 2012 to form Endeavor Air, a subsidiary of Delta. Additionally, he has served as an active duty captain and in pilot training and flight safety capacities.

CBS News learned the first officer graduated from a university with an accredited and well-respected aviation program, and so was able to start working with fewer than 1,500 hours under a Restricted Air Transport Pilot certificate. She crossed the 1,500-hour mark and earned her full ATP certificate in January 2023, which is the highest-level pilot certification in the U.S., before completing training last April, and has been flying for Endeavor since then.

Delta says her flight experience "exceeded the minimum requirements" set by federal regulations.

She passed all of her check rides and there were "no red flags" about her pilot skills, a source familiar told CBS News.
