They could have applied rudder to potentially save themselves, at the cost of the entire airframe and it's contents both alive and inert.

They just face-tanked the biggest fire apparatus on the planet instead.

That ATC fucked up and the apparatus operators fucked up. Every time I had to work/cross an active the final "we good" is on YOU not ATC. ATC's juggling fucking grenades up there and when it comes to runway incursions on purpose or otherwise, you're literally not going to have a problem if you stay put.

Some controllers at Bagram would have vehicles hold short so they could get a head of steam up before hitting the runway and minimize their exposure time.
