Cmdr. Joseph E. Darlak, skipper of the USS Vandegrift, was removed Friday by Capt. John L. Schultz after an investigation "due to loss of confidence after demonstrating poor leadership and failure to ensure the proper conduct of his wardroom officers" during the three-day September stop, the Navy said in a statement.
Executive officer Lt. Cmdr. Ivan A. Jimenez and the ship's chief engineer and operations officer were also relieved "for personal conduct involving use of alcohol and not adhering to established liberty policies," the statement said.

The Army needs to take a lesson from the Navy from time to time on using what I call the "Trump Method", i.e. YOU'RE FIRED.

I'm sure the stories will live on with the ship's sailors and become part of the ship's lore.

I think the normal "boys will be boys" attitude is still out there, but now days will get you in trouble.

My last deployment to Thailand, near the end, the unit SgtMaj asked me "haven't had many liberty problems, have we?" I said "we'd have a lot less if we didn't make painful rules for ourselves." He asked what I meant and I pointed out that almost every problem we had with liberty was related to either under age drinking or returning late from liberty, both problems we created for ourselves, as the Thais could care less. We had a grand total of 3-4 liberty "incidents" otherwise.

I just realized that we've entered a rare period in history, where the "Last Hard Class" opccurs in the future rather than the past.

Then: Back in my day, the ones not drunk in port were members of the watch. MAYBE.
