I think most of know that the US started to intervene in Vietnam in the 50s. This is a good article on how the CIA used Vietnamese Navy personnel to crew PT boats and use various ethnicities to go over the fence on COIN and guerrilla operations in North Vietnam (including Taiwanese commandos--I did not know that).

The PT incursions might have had some luck, but CIA-backed SVN fence hoppers in general were often caught. Their names are still redacted in declassified mission documents. A number of teams were immediately compromised or simply vanished never to be heard from again, largely due to the North's espionage activities and their highly placed SVN sleepers.
