To begin study of Pashto, I have two resources. The book Your First 100 Words in Pashto is a short and simple book, but actually looks like it will give me a good kickstart with portable flashcards and other aids. I also picked up web access to Rosetta Stone, which has a Pashto course that I can work through.
For getting an initial foothold in understanding contemporary Afghanistan, I am studying David Isby's Afghanistan - Graveyard of Empires. There are many references to social organizations and structures which I coud also see turning into a set of flashcards for myself.
