Hi, all. I've just DEPed into the Air Force and I'm planning to become a PJ. I recently got married and I'm ready for a new phase of my life. I'm 27 now and need to get in shape for the PAST as quickly as possible (can't go to the Air Force's BMT when I'm 28).

I'm off to the pool now...

Welcome; by DEP'd in, do you mean you have a PJ slot?

Thanks.

Not yet. At the moment I have Fusion Analyst as my top choice because I still haven't taken the PAST. I need some decent improvement on my run (11:45) and swim (can't make it 500m freestyle yet without stopping multiple times) before I can take it and pass. I'm guessing I'll be ready in 6 weeks or less (defintely for cals), but I'm not sure. I'll be 28 in about 9 months so I'm a bit concerned about getting a BMT date, but my recruiter said I'll be fine.

Welcome. I waited over a year and a half for either a SOWT or TACP contract..and it never came. Just giving some perspective on getting contracts, the Air Force doesn't need people as much right now so certain contracts are hard to come by in a timely matter. Your past test numbers also come into play as to who will get a contract if one pops up. One more thing is getting the minimums won't guarantee you a contract either, when a Special Tactics Recruiter does your final PAST before you ship he will not pass you if you are only getting by on the minimum standards. Good luck.

Welcome to the site. I don't know that you're going to be ready in 6 weeks. You need to shave like 2:45 off your run to be passing the minimum run time. And if you can't swim 500 yards straight, well.........

:-/ Concern increased.. But understood. Thanks for sharing that. Maybe I'm being to optimistic, but I gotta try. If only I was a bit younger...

A bit younger? Sounds like you need to take a hard realistic look at yourself and what you have to offer. If you're not in shape now, what makes you think 6 weeks will make a difference? The older you get the harder it is to stay in shape, much less GET in shape.

You sound like you are chasing a regret brought on by the onset of the magic 30 not someone who's determined to join a brotherhood of the elites and dedicated.

There's no regret. I have no issues with getting myself into shape and I certainly don't feel old in anyway. My concern is with the "before your 28th birthday" requirement that the Air Force has to enter BMT. If I was younger (and learned about PJ's sooner), I'd have a longer window to secure a PJ contract. It seems as though 9 months may be cutting it close according to Kheenbish and the amount of time he waited for a SOWT contract. Honestly, I can't imagine it taking more than 10 weeks to pass the PAST. But I'm shooting for 6 anyway because I am in fact determined.

SOWT, all the jobs that really interest me in the Air Force require either the PAST or the DLAB(PJ, SERE instructor, SOWT, Airborne Crypto, etc.). I don't have nearly as strong of an interest in the other jobs, but I'm 45 credits into a Computer Science A.S., so, I do find the "high-tech" jobs interesting (but in my free time, I'd much rather be camping than using a computer). Now would I be happy with Fusion Analyst? Tough call, but if I can't secure a PJ contract, at least there's the chance I could cross-train(?) later on.

As far as what I find attractive about PJ... probably the standards answers. "That Others May Live" being number one. The brotherhood, the challenge, the amazing pipeline, the EMT training. Honestly, I could probably write a long time about why I want to be a PJ, but the post is getting long and my wife wants us to watch Dexter :die:

Can you give me the fusion analyst AFSC. I want to look it up.

1N431. I believe it used to be called Network Intelligence Analyst, but the Air Force Liaison told me the new name better represents the "fusion" of intelligence from different (electronic?) sources. Nothing to do with nuclear fusion.

Eventually, one can train into: 1N431A Digital Network Analyst; 1N431B Analysis and Production. Don't know anything about those though, other than I couldn't select them.
