Hq 1st Army Deploying to Afghanistan, WTFO?

Latest DoD Press Release has 1st Army Deploying to Afghanistan, WTFO? I thought 1st Army's Mission was to mobilize Resevr and Guard units?

Looks like an attempt to retain GO/CSM Slots to me.

First Army has deployed a few detachments and command groups, they conduct training both CONUS and OCONUS. I would expect that they will establish a command to be used to train the Afghan's. It's a good idea IMO, First Army has some of the best combat troop development programs in US Military right now.

Eh, no better or worse than all of the Armored and Mech Infantry units already over here and if they focus on training the Afghans and not war fighting there shouldn't be a problem.

This being Afghanistan and our military, I expect there to be problems.
