Hello,
I am currently a mechanical engineering major at the University of Central Florida. Upon graduation I plan to enlist into the US Army with an 18X contract. I have just started to do pt with Army ROTC on campus and plan to take a few leadership courses next semester. I have been a longtime lurker of the site and greatly appreciate the time and knowledge everyone of you devote to the answering questions.

Welcome to the site. Why an 18X contract if you are going to have a degree?

Well its along the lines of the many posts on this forum of people seeking guidance whether to enlist out of high school or go to college get a degree and enlist after graduation. Personally I felt I was not mentally or physically ready for a SOF selection at the time of graduation and I was looking to pursue a degree that I could use later in life after the military (assuming military is still my goal). People always ask why not do ROTC and commission as an officer, and my response is simply that that is not what I am interested in doing, however with a degree I could attend OCS if ever given the chance and it was something that I feel is appropriate in my career. Moreover I want to take my time in college to mature and build a strong foundation of fitness and I plan on taking either french or arabic (arabic seems rather tough) not necessarily to be able to pass the language requirement of SFQC but to explore foreign languages. Right now I am just trying to focus on my 25m target but I never let my end goal slip far from mind.

I realize I did not fully answer the why 18X part of the question. Being a part of the military namely the Army has been a dream of mine since I was a young child, it has always been what I see myself doing and honestly nothing else. As for Special Forces I am drawn to their unconventional style of warfare. Sure there are the Navy SEALs and the Rangers but there is no brotherhood like that shown on a SF ODA. The physical challenge and intellectual requirements are like none other something that strongly appeals to me.

While I may understand what your saying regarding brotherhood, I am sure some Rangers and SEALs may disagree. Hell, even as a Paratrooper (non-SOF), I have experienced brotherhood that will live forever in mine and my Infantry brothers minds.

Sorry that bit about the Navy SEALs and Rangers was meant to stick with the unconventional warfare not brotherhood. But regardless what you say is absolutely true.
