Hello. My name is Conor. I am 26 years old, married, with three kids (one biological and two whose adoption is almost finished), and a high school English teacher.

This summer I signed an 11x Option 40 contract, to ship out 20150707. I had already signed my teaching contract for this year, hence the delay.

A little background: I was going to join out of high school, but my mom convinced me to apply to West Point. I didn't get the congressional appointment, freaked out a little bit because it was January of my senior year, and applied to Clemson University instead of enlisting. I've been here in Upstate SC ever since, but the desire to serve with the Rangers has never left, and has particularly grown over the last year. It turns out that not enlisting out of high-school was a really good move, since I am much stronger physically, mentally, and emotionally now than when I was 18.

I'm here to read and learn. Thank you all for the opportunity to do both.

Conor

Welcome to SS. I admire your decision to follow through with joining active military service, good on ya for doing so. If you had nailed down a USMA appointment, you would have started life as a second Lt. As it worked out, you went to Clemson for your undergrad years. Why not nail down the commission now, as you enter active military service, or are you going OCS?

Thank you all for the welcome.

I want to be Infantry, and have read and heard that it is very difficult to branch Infantry out of OCS (USMA and ROTC cadets take those spots early). I also want to be in the 75th Ranger Regiment from the beginning of my career, which I would not be able to do as an officer. As of now, I would be open to going to OCS later on in my career, but obviously that might change later.

I admire your decision to nail down a "Ranger" tab. It speaks well of you, and I wish you the very best of luck on your path. I hope our site will aid you on your path, and; do stay in touch. Again, welcome to SS.

Welcome to SS. You'll be at Benning during the hottest and most humid time of year for training, so be sure you know about hydrating. The Drill will make sure you do, but make sure you avoid diuretics as much as possible. Sounds like you have a plan, so stick with it. Best of Luck!

Thanks again everyone for the welcome and advice. I've learned a lot from lurking around here already.

Conor
