Hello All,

I have a few questions about getting into SF and succeeding with my current medical history which is listed below:

I had a torn labrum which is now fully recovered after surgery. (Surgery was about 2 years ago)

I had a torn ACL which is now fully recovered after surgery. (Surgery was about 5 years ago)

Asthma has a kid but never needed an inhaler and played high school sports just fine (Never affected me in high school. Also, I know that this has been answered before and all I have read is if you haven't had asthma after 13 then you are fine. Which I haven't).

With the above listed, will I be allowed to go 18x route and have a successful and long lasting career if I do make it into SF?

While I cannot answer any of your SF questions:

Have you spoke with a recruiter yet and had this discussion? It's always a good piece of info to have when guys try to answer these types of questions (which is often).

Everything combat-forward in the military is hell on those very joints. There are two questions: 1) can you, and should you.

Even after a SLAP repair you will be putting an enormous amount of strain on that shoulder and in time it will reinjure.

Once you tear an ACL the likelihood of reinjury goes up.

I am not going to say it can't be done, but I will say the odds are not in your favor.

Thank you all for the quick responses! I did talk to my recruiter and he pretty said that I could easily get an 18x contract as long as I have waivers. He then followed up with, once you go to basic you will have a 98% chance of dropping or not getting selected and getting put as needs of the army. In other words my recruiter seems straight to the point and speaks very generally(aka probably not looking out for my best interest).

Basically, graduated college about a year ago and have a solid paying job. Everybody is telling me to be grateful and not hurt myself physically anymore. but I don't really care about the money and just want to go to SF and get selected. All I can really think about is going in and I figure now is better than when I turn 30 full of regret that I didn't try. My knee and shoulder would probably only be worse at that point anyways.

Also, am I authorized to wear some sort of knee support throughout the course? More of a precaution so as to hopefully prevent further injury.

I don't need a knee support but I would use one if the opportunity arises. Basically to protect myself and take care of my body especially the parts that are the most likely to break. Aka the places I had surgery.

Basically if I am already hurt why not take care of my knee and shoulder as best as I can even if it means using some sort of support?

That makes sense seeing how a 50+ pound rucksack that you will be carrying all day isn't going to help your shoulder plus all the gear as well.

Thanks for your help and opinions. I will strengthen my shoulder as much as I can and go from there. We will see.
