Important mod note- professionalism reminder

I often tell my cadets some version of "simply not being a dick goes a long way" when you're dealing with people. That's especially true on the Internet, where most of us don't know each other well IRL, and context and body language are harder or non-existent.

I've heard mafia and 1% bikers both say the same thing: the most important words to use in prison or "Please", "thank you", and "excuse me." If they are good enough for those folks in that situation, then we can probably use them on the outside.

I also think the more individually powerful you are, and the more confident you are as a leader, the "nicer" you can afford to be. Some of the scariest people I've dealt with are the most polite, because they know that's all it takes to get what they want. Bosses that say "would you please..." when they could just as easily say "OK shitbrick, STFU and do this because I said so." Seasoned leaders who say "thank you" to someone for doing something that they had to do in the first place. "Excuse me" when you're the biggest guy in the room and you're making your way through the crowd. What was it Road House? "Be nice. Until it's time to NOT be nice."

That is very good advice from a very interesting demographic.

I would imagine there are of course, certain situations that might call for all three of those words at the same time but I also imagine that delivery and context would be very important. For example, it could be very counterproductive to bump into someone at a biker bar and blurt out...

Excuse me !!!
PLEASE get the fuck out of my way
Thank you.

...knowing how to read the room can also help avoid a lot of trouble
