Any of you watch Extreme Rescues on NatGeo?
Looks like the first season aired back in March but I hadn't seen it. I just watched the third episode at the recommendation of a Doc. buddy. All I can say is, "Holy. shit." For anyone that's ever been involved in SAR work and/or if you enjoy spending time outdoors/backcountry, the mountain biking story is amazing. Here's a link to the episode:

Quick summary, on an island off Madagascar, a pro downhill mountain biker crashes during a training ride with buddies. The handlebar breaks and severs the femoral artery at his groin; no tourniquet possible. They're in a remote area and the dude is bleeding out. I'll leave it there.
Same episode has a tree well incident while skiing. While not real common, it's an incredibly serious and urgent issue when it does happen; estimated to be ~5% of ski area deaths annually. If you're not skiing with a buddy or your buddy doesn't see you disappear, you've got a problem.
I'm often a sucker for some of these shows for a few reasons. In this case, I really enjoy both of these activities, which is why my buddy told to me to check it out, and very aware of the risks that come with them, particularly when remote. So, I always watch these stories with a curious fascination; always something to learn from and prepare for.
