The White Lotus Season1.

Billed as some form of comedy, drama, dramedy...whatever, this managed to clock it at "none of the above" for much of the show. It wasn't anything except a story with some dramatic or comedic moments. The writing and acting were well done and well cast, but the season (a second is out and I think a third is planned) was just...there. It was enough to entertain us, but not enough to praise the series.

Casting, again they did a great job with casting and acting and creating CHARACTERS YOU HATE. That's part of the show, satire (however dull) of modern society, but it created people you barely liked. there were one or two outliers, but I generally didn't like anyone. The only character who wasn't a meme (but is also a meme) is Connie Britton's 24/7 executive work personality who obsesses over things like her Zoom background because she doesn't want the company's Chinese investors to know she is on vacation.

It was entertaining, but slow, and the societal satire is there, but it is also so natural it didn't come across as satire. Everyone lives on their phones so when the tenn loses his phone it causes a problem...and that's it. Bland, something we expect, not over-the-top commentary, just a statement.

It is critically acclaimed, but I consider it to be filler for when you want something new, but nothing is out at the moment.

Light at the end of the tunnel, and it’s not a train…

Homicide: Life On The Street might actually come to streaming at some point

The death of Andre Braugher last week has apparently pushed NBCUniversal to finally try and figure out how to get influential police procedural Homicide: Life On The Street—which gave Braugher his breakout role, as Detective Frank Pembleton—onto streaming. That comes from David Simon, who later created The Wire and wrote the book that Homicide was based on, who posted on Twitter that he’s been informed by “a reliable source” that the network is finally trying to the show’s music rights so it can be released on streaming. He says he’s been told that it will be a “lot of work” to actually do that, but the proverbial wheels seem to be in motion. “Andre alone ought to rate such,” he added.

White Lotus Season 2. I'm only two episodes in and the writers decided to incorporate some comedy into the show. So, we're in a better place than Season 1, but it has similar themes. Weak social commentary, almost every character is unlikeable, gorgeous setting (this time it is Sicily), solid casting and acting, and predictable character behavior. I wouldn't leave my wife for Aubrey Plaza, but I would make some questionable decisions and sort out the consequences later. White Lotus has managed to center a character around her that is almost devoid of life.

Unless there's some dramatic change, I predict 2.5 out of 5 Vespas.

I liked it. It needed more Sydney Sweeney and Alexandra D.

Tokyo Vice Season 1 (2 is out in Feb. I think).

Loosely based around a book of the same name, it follows an American working for the largest newspaper in Japan. He's a crime reporter so, surprise! He's into the yakuza.

Michael Mann produced the series which you can see and feel even in the first episode. The casting is great, the writing solid, and the plot formulaic but strong. I'm looking forward to season 2.

Fucked up media monopolies holding onto old contracts with HBO. I refuse to give Bell Media, that owns Crave, any more money. I'll wait for it to go onto another streaming service after contracts run out.
I’d forgotten how much I hate(d) Canuck telecom.
