Just binge watched Westworld over the past few days based on comments here.
It's a beautiful show visually. The story is interesting enough. Was drawn in early and enjoyed it. Writing for a show this complex is just amazing but flawed. Maybe because I watched all the episodes nearly back to back but the plot holes/flaws in writing really began to bother me; more so now even reflecting on them...
*** SPOILERS BELOW ***
For a show that went out of it's way to explain/show the park's extensive fail-safes, security, etc. early on, numerous aspects of the story-line become very problematic, especially Mauve's entire story line. With all the oversight emphasized early, including the monitoring of minute details of host scripts and movements, not to mention they "know everything about everyone in the park", how could all her major deviations go so far unchecked? They couldn't. Technicians have permissions to completely alter code, especially core code...and without raising any flags? Really? That wouldn't even be allowed in today's "primitive" coding world.
Then there is the issue with bullets/harm. In the first episode, Teddy shoots Ed Harris' character and the bullets impact/disintegrate with no effect. In later episodes (7/8 or so), Ed Harris is shot multiple times by Teddy with the impacts knocking him down and out. Why the change? In addition, Ed Harris' cheek is cut with a knife. If hosts can't harm human guests, how is this possible? If the bullets used in Westworld are effective at killing hosts, why do the security teams have different guns with presumably different bullets? Bullets are bullets. With people flying off the handle shooting the first thing that moves wrong, what prevents guests from accidently or purposely killing other guests?
Elise and Stubbs...we're left hanging as to their actual fate. Perhaps on purpose or did they just forget to close that story line? Are they dead? Somewhere else? None of the security noticed Elise walking through the park? The entire security team knew Stubbs was going to Elise's location. First, he goes by himself when early on an entire security team is sent for one relatively minor issue with a host. Okay. But then, no one misses him when he doesn't check in? Guess I need to wait until 2018 for those answers...
As a host, Berhard could not see the door in the cottage in the woods. He couldn't "see" the picture of himself either. How could he even see the cottage?
