National Protest and 'disband the cops' discussion (please review page 1)

New Mayor of New York is about defund the NYPD...

Fucking do it!!!!! Do it!!!!! Let that city burn, let Americans see what happens when you play stupid games. I'm tired of all of this "defund the police" bullshit. Let the city burn!!!! We didn't learn enough from a few years ago, so let's allow this one to play out. Hell, encourage this to happen.

LET NEW YORK BURN!!!! Wait for the pleas to activate the National Guard and then because that's a state mission, withhold Federal dollars and let the state of New York foot the bill. Show this country and the world the folly of such nonsense. Businesses will relocate, the NYSE will be under siege, our economy will probably suffer as a result, but let's end this defund the police nonsense once and for all and show the word what it means.

I like your thinking, young man. That's the kind of straight forward flawless logic like when you call in the nape. Settles everybody down.

He's not the mayor yet, he just beat Cuomo to be the Dem candidate.

He's still up against Adams and whatever GOP candidate there is.
So, label me a cynic- for the rank and file New Yorkers, it has become ‘bad enough’. Too bad those normal sane people are now outnumbered thanks to demographics. Same as in London, same as in Sweden, same as in Minnesota.

There is *no way* this dude beats Cuomo (who I have no love for) and then doesn’t walk through whatever Republican (new or old) candidate they put up.

I disagree with @AWP on the “let the city die” line of thinking, if only because no one has seen how bad it’s about to get.

I’ll make the call right now- because I detest fence sitting contrarians- Mamdani is the next Mayor of NYC, and America writes large will simply pretend the things in NY happening are just like LA- “Well yeah it’s a hellscape but it really doesn’t affect me so sucks to suck.”

Meanwhile, the city devolves into a Bane-led abomination and the people there pay the price.

What do you mean by this?

I don't think that's a bad bet, but the race isn't Mamdani vs the GOP candidate. It's really him vs Adams. I think there's a decent possibility Adams wins as the independent candidate.

I mean exactly what I said- influx of foreign born, non-assimilated residents voting for a candidate that represents the morals, values, and ideologies of their home and not what’s best for their current city.

Under Sadiq Khan, London has entire lawless areas they dub “little Pakistan” and roving rape gangs of afghanis.

Ilhan Omar gives speeches in Somali to her American constituents. They call parts of Minnesota “Little Somalia”.

I have more examples, but two should clearly elucidate how sanctuary cities + suicidal empathy = total chaos.

Secondly- Adams has two distinct issues. He dared align with Trump, and the democrats will throw every dollar at an apostate of the party. The mainstream media will coalesce behind Mamdani, and the most dangerous threat to our representative republic (AWFULs) will vote against the guy that aligned with Trump.

This has happened with essentially every wave of of non-WASP immigration we've had since the country was founded. I don't see the current situation as unique or concerning.
It takes (roughly) 2-3 generations for most immigrants to become "Americanized", so it'll smooth out.

On the other things:

The UK situation is dogshit, no doubt. Thats got a ton to do with how they police in general, not just the immigrant population.

On Omar giving speeches to her Somali-speaking constituents in Somali; I don't care. We have politicians that conduct speaking engagements with various constituent groups (religious, ethnic, etc) all the time. Hell, Rubio was on the Spainish-langauge Fox News not to long ago.

Again, I don’t think this is a bad take. I do think the "rank and file" New Yorker Dem is probably closer to Adams than Mamdani though, so it may split the Dem vote. If Adams wins over centrists/some right-leaning voters he could win with that coalition.

To your bolded- I do care, especially when that specific politician foments violence and costs me (the taxpayer) money. The going-in assumption for all immigrants is assimilation; Omar hasn't met that bar, and Minnesota has paid for that. To boot, Omar has been very clear about her infusion of "Somalia First" initiatives while in congress. I reject everyone that splits their allegiances between America and any other country- I feel much more strongly about those that are elected officials and say so outright.

The way the UK polices has a lot to do with the "political optics" of not wanting to offend the populations of people causing the problems. Huge data set there; policing policy is the symptom of the underlying disease.

***ETA***- This is the suicidal empathy I mentioned earlier. The assumption that all cultures share core values and morals at the behest of the home countries' morals and values. "The barbarians are at the gate, and the folks inside are debating which pronouns to call them as not to offend." London opened it's doors to mass migration of immigrants that had no intention of assimilation to England's culture, gained a plurality, and voted in Sadiq Khan who now protects literal roving organized gangs of rapists and punishes the victims who report them, while the politicians label anyone who dares mention the facts a "white supremacist xenophobe".

On Adams- a holistic look at his vulnerabilities is the issue. 1.5M Muslims in the greater NY metro area voting on ideological lines. Jewish vote probably won't mobilize for Adams, most likely they stay home or pull chalks and leave NY (hard to live in a city that's going to bring the intifada to your doorstep, and I don't blame them.) Adams also has the optics of his evolved anti-immigration stance; there are your AWFULs and the younger liberal democrats on this election's hottest of hot-button issues.

Adams is a democrat, posturing as an independent, while signalling to conservatives. It's not a winning platform in any sense.

KJP approves.

To the bold, this is why I laugh at "Libertarians" and "Independents." Neither group will prove as popular as they think because the swing votes they seek, indeed require, do not exist in today's world. People will still vote for their party no matter how much they agree with the third-party option.

Adams won't win the race, but he'll force his old party to spend money fighting his election. In a world where the Dems are brokeity broke broke broke the race will siphon money that could go elsewhere.

That has to be a troll.

I'm going to respectfully call bullshit on that claim - TWEEEEET - flag on the play - intentional shenanigans - 5 yards

I'm an old broken down fuck that has been around since the late 60's
Immigration has NOT smoothed itself out yet - in fact - it is getting worse.

@amlove21 you and I are pretty much just gonna disagree, which is fine. I wanna highlight where we are much more aligned in this topic though.

This is good. I think it is fair to be concerned about or empathetic to other countries issues/populations, especially when it could affect us, but that shouldn't come at the detriment or outright avoidance of American issues.

Agreed, but NYC is also super fucking weird sometimes. I really think it will come down to how many right-leaning voters he pulls. It may be one of those times where people vote for the "independent" to ensure the socialist doesn't win. When the GOP candidate is A conservative talk show radio host who lost by 2/3rds of the vote last time, it might happen.
Either way, it'll be an interesting race to watch.
