Talking about the .357... Each member is shot once a week with a .357 magnum while wearing his body armor.

In the '60s, probably into the '70s, paras and others used something like that to prep troops in live-fire: dig a hole maybe three feet wide, bury a wooden plank at the edge of the hole and place a wee bit of plastique in the hole.
The guys would lay flat on the ground with their boots planted against the plank and the instructor would blow up the plastique.
You'd really feel that one, so I'm told.
