FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (USASOC News Service, April 28, 2010) – The 11th annual Country Music Marathon and Half Marathon in Nashville, Tn., may not have provided all of its 36,000 entrants with the best conditions for the respective 26.2 and 13.1 mile runs April 24. Weather advisories were in effect throughout the area all day, at one point forcing race officials to pull runners from a portion of the course.
For the dozens of Soldiers from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) who turned out for the event, rain and wind were no deterrent. All 84 Soldiers who ran to honor the memory of fellow Night Stalker, Staff Sgt. Levi Pigman, finished the half marathon. Pigman died of a reported cardiac event after completing the same race at last year’s event.
“The run really was important because it provided an opportunity for both the family of Levi and for the many soldiers who knew Levi, professionally and personally, to gather and remember a great American, superb NCO, and friend,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Mark Mastrian, command sergeant major, 2nd Battalion, 160th SOAR (A).
Pigman’s father, mother and brother traveled from their hometown of Hamilton, Mont., and completed the race as well.
Another 13 Night Stalkers honored Pigman by working the medical tent at the finish line of the marathon. The 160th SOAR (A) doctors, medics and clinic staff assisted runners as they attempted to recover from the grueling run.
“We treated about 150 runners,” said Maj. Matt Fandre, Regiment Surgeon. “Overall, the guys did an outstanding job despite the weather and the chaos associated with the sheer volume of runners at the finish line.”
After the race had been run, and the massive clean-up crews and volunteers returned the Nashville streets back to the city’s motorized commuters, Night Stalkers who took the opportunity to honor one of the their own were still expressing their satisfaction with the day’s events.
“We could not have asked for a better event,” said Maj. Anthony W. Hudson, commander of Delta Company, 2nd Battalion, 160th SOAR (A). “The weather cooperated – mostly. We had a great run, an excellent tribute to Levi, and a great social with his family afterwards … I look forward to seeing [everyone] again next year.”
