Last winter, I applied for assignment with 160th SOAR. shortly after having been promoted to PFC. Within a few weeks, I received confirmation that I had met the requirements, and been selected to attend green platoon, spring of 2014. A few months after that, I was promoted to Specialist.
I've spoken to a few NCO's in my section, and expressed to them that I wanted to get promoted to Sergeant before I leave for Green Platoon. With the time that I have before I leave, they've told me it'd definitely be possible, but I'd really have to bust my ass to get there. Which I'm more than willing to do. Within my unit, I'm one of the best in my MOS (92A Automated Logistics Specialist), and I've really helped raise the standards in my section since I've been here.
However, the question I have is, would this even be a wise thing to pursue at this point?
I ask because, when I was chosen to attend Green Platoon, I was still a PFC, and I really don't want to risk the regiment not having a place for me as an NCO.
I've also heard, that 160th, prefers to train their NCO's within their own ranks. And while I am positive I could become a great leader within my current unit, I don't want to be put into a leadership position within the 160th, if the leadership and occupational skills I've developed with my current unit, aren't to par with leaders who have grown up within the Regiment.
I haven't exactly been in the Army a long time, but I have seen once or twice, NCO's come from different units, where the standards, and SOP's were radically different, and have a tough time adjusting and finally getting on track (in regards to MOS skill level, not leadership). I really don't want to run into this problem. Especially, if the Night Stalkers might just find it easier to boot me and replace me, if I'm not what they need, when they need it. (whereas my current unit, would sort of drag you along until you got with the program)
Any advice is much appreciated. Or even if anyone can tell me if they've ever been in a similar situation, and what they did.
