he told me once (paraphrasing) 'we sent them to the army because they'd take anyone.'

Just joking. But seriously They probably sent them to the Army because they couldn't do pull ups.

I can count a million examples of what 'MARINE' stands for (Muscles Are Required, Intelligence Not Essential), but in reality post 9/11 they (and most) could be very picky, until around 2006 or so

Well, this should turn out ok...

The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) has now dropped a standard IQ test for new recruits and promised speedier background checks in its latest recruitment effort.

Background checks on new volunteers currently take longer than six months, per Blacklock's Reporter. The new measures are “to recruit enough diversity.”
“Recruitment is my number one priority,” said Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Jennie Carignan at a press conference Wednesday.

“We are aiming towards being a representation of all Canadians within our forces.”

“It means we need to recruit enough diversity.”

“I don’t know what woke means. But what I can tell you is that for us, the ultimate goal is to build strong teams.”https://www.westernstandard.news/news/canadian-military-expands-dei-agenda-again/60801

New recruits will be subject to a Scored Employment Application Form that “asks a series of questions about your life experiences.”

The 31-page form questions volunteers about grade point averages, “how many courses you have failed throughout your academic career,” familiarity with firearms, volunteerism and employment history.

It replaces a previous IQ test, the Chief of Defence Staff General Jennie Carignan, that asked seven pages’ worth of multiple choice questions on math and reading comprehension.

“The Canadian Armed Forces is not lowering its standards,” the defence department said in a statement.

“The modernized recruitment process will bring in the best talent and provide a better applicant experience.”https://www.westernstandard.news/ne...inimum-strength-by-nearly-20000-members/61619

The IQ test posed questions like, “In the word ‘Ecclesiastes’ how many E’s are there with an S next to them?” and “If in the army there is one officer for every 16 privates, how many officers are there in a regiment consisting of 1,105 officers and privates?”

Other questions include: “A boy buys a toy for $20, a book for $10 and a compact disc for $15. How much does he pay for all?” and “Which number comes next in the following series: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12..?”

“A team of clothing workers had an output of 1,000 uniforms per week,” asks another Aptitude Test question.

“This output was increased by 20% which demanded an increase of 50 uniforms per worker. How many workers are there on the team?”

The military on Wednesday said it will also speed enlistment by allowing recruits to undergo basic training while security checks are underway.

CAF in a 2024 Inquiry Of Ministry tabled in the Commons said it typically took six months to process volunteers.

“The timeline begins when an applicant completes the Canadian Armed Forces Aptitude Test and ends when the applicant is enrolled,” said the Inquiry.

The average processing time was 196 days.

The military requires 71,500 fully trained regular forces to operate at minimum strength, according to a September 26 defence department briefing note on CAF readiness. Trained effective strength was 52,539 soldiers, sailors and air crew.

Defence Minister Bill Blair, former chief of Toronto police, told reporters June 18 that the military must be more competitive in attracting volunteers.

“Every police officer in this country has gone through a probationary period and I think if we adopted the same opportunity in the Canadian Armed Forces it would give people an appropriate chance,” said Blair.

“They could come in and begin their training.”

“Often Canadians will come and apply for a job somewhere, an opportunity, a career, but they’ll also apply in two or three other places and the first place that calls is the place where they go.”

“We’ve got to be the first.”
