On this day 40 years ago, Chicago Cubs outfielder, and former Marine, Rick Monday made one of the greatest saves in baseball of all time. Two men ran onto the field at Dodger Stadium and doused lighter fluid all over Old Glory to light her on fire. Monday darted over from center field, but before he could reach there, the men had struck a match. Lucky for Old Glory, the wind blew it out. Still sprinting, Monday retrieved the flag, and kept her from more harm. All these years later, he has kept that flag safe from any further harm as he still has it in his possession.
