Royal Marines may be cut 30% and lose two amphibs

Marines--Royal or otherwise--can't conduct proper amphib operations off carriers that do not have floodable well-decks or the capability to handle landing craft, assault boats, amtracs etc. The two ships mentioned in the report (HMS Albion, below) are relatively new, launched since 2001.

It's a stupid idea to cut a capability like amphib assault ships, especially since the UK only has these two. Surely they could find another way to cut costs without jeopardizing a unique and necessary specialty. (Hello...Falklands War).

Sounds like Jeremy Corbin is already in charge. :-o But as the article points out, it’s started the conversation & not set in stone.

True. An island nation with a glorious history of seafaring and seafighting shitcanning amphib ships and downsizing its already small Marine contingent???

Sacrilege.

Amphibious operations in the form of beach landings are out dated...until you need them.

Right.

Amphib allows you to get a lot of people on the ground in a hurry. It doesn't necessarily have to be under fire. It allows you to bring heavy vehicles, tanks, APCs, or amtracs. I've done helo vertical envelopment ops from carriers and amphib assaults from amphib ship well decks in both landing craft and amtracs. Helo ops are limited.

Trying to think larger picture here, aside from major operations, as Marines and sailors begin to rotate amongst other countries ships, maybe this could be a win-win. This could reduce the number of deployment for US Marines or Navy ships by sharing responsibility amognst host nations.

The embarkation of USMC units aboard foreign flagged vessels is mostly due to the USN's lack of amphib ships. By lack I mean we have "only" 30 😬😱 and need 8 more...but won't have them until 2028 or so. And there are some US lawmakers bemoaning the fact that our amphib capabilities are "eroding."

The MEU is the heart and soul of the Marine Corps, it is the truly unique capability...having self-sufficient combat ready units afloat around the globe, with all their supporting elements at hand, positioned for immediate action.

And they've come in handy, many times. The British govt should rethink shitcanning it's two amphibs.
