I made the Fort Irwin hotel take two of my soldiers and their families in when I found mold in their housing units, to which housing paid for and then completely leveled them and rebuilt again. They took black mold seriously. But they were contracted out nowadays and maybe saw this as easy money.

I'm reading that some of the 1776 money is coming from the defense budget and specifically from housing allowance. If true, I agree with @Marauder06 that the housing deficiencies should be addressed first. Soldiers may want the cash to spend on motorcyle payments, but taking care of troops requires leaders to make less popular decisions.

The DoW needs to fix its moldy, leaking housing units, DFAC problems, and contaminated groundwater long before it does anything else. Hands down.

I'm sure the troops will welcome the money. I know I would. But if I were still in, there are things I think all of that money (something like $2.5B?) could be better spent on:

1) accountability for the way Afghanistan ended
2) mold out of the barracks
3) reforming the VA
4) fixing whatever the perpetual fuckup is with the chow halls
5) IT updates so that systemd
6) reducing training requirements
7) stamping out the last vestiges of DEI, and making standards the same for both genders

But those things take effort to address systemic problems. Much easier to change the PT tests again and ban beards.

Seems like it's coming out of a Fund for BAH payments.

specifically, there was 2.9 billion allocated to allow for changing BAH payments in areas where the housing market fluctuates quicker than the yearly adjustments would support.

I'm still around the military at times, and I do see more of this than I remember. Maybe its just now I'm outside looking in or that I've always been around only combat arms units. But I think despite the pushback and name calling, Hegseth is trying to right the ship. Starting with giving DI's their authority back.

I disagree in the sense that the tailoring for them is horrible. Whoever does the tailoring for the Marines should be the one who designed the cut for these. They generally look sloppy IMO.

The mandatory acquisition date for the Army's latest dress uniform was after I retired, so I refused to buy a set.

I think the uniform looks really good, I just don't think it was necessary. The blues got the job done. Plus it was one fewer uniform that we needed to buy and maintain.

Also, I DEEPLY resented all of the Army's uniform changes, not because they occurred, but because of the timing. In the course of my career we went from BDU and DCU to ACU (garbage) to OCP, which is basically BDU after you've worn it in the field for six months. We could have just sewn pockets and velcro on BDUs and been done with it. We went from greens + blues to just blues. Great, one less uniform. But then we added the browns (unnecessary) and kept the blues.

AND WE DID ALL OF THIS WHILE WE WERE FIGHTING LIKE FOUR WARS, AND LOSING AT LEAST TWO OF THEM.
