I was recently reading the STO AMA page on reddit. The STO who runs that page said that in the near future it is very likely that Combat Controllers could be doing their own missions (non-joint support missions) like the other SOF units do. He mentioned that this is probable since after all, the SEALs were originally just "underwater demolition divers" and now they are mostly a ground operations oriented group. The Rangers used to have airfield seizures as a primary function and they don't always do that now either.
Also, I've heard more and more that the army is trying to get their own JTACs and that makes sense for a branch to want its own JTACs without having to draw from a sister branch. and JTAC school is open to all branches.
If the other branches stopped using CCT JTACs, Combat Controllers would obviously be left with less JTAC and CAS roles which have been the CCT's primary role recently. AFSOC is the only branch that provides specialty commandos to teams. With less need to do that, would AFSOC then stop sending CCTs out as single commandos and start deploying the CCTs as weapons specialist teams on operations instead?
Thoughts...
