Closing in on the 30th anniversary of the start of combat operations in the Gulf War, January 17. I think it sometimes gets a bit lost behind the long OIF/OEF campaigns, but it was hugely significant.

Some folks call it a cakewalk, but our people waiting to fight didn't know that. And they'd been subjected to six months of media talking-head bullshit about how our tanks would bog down, how our Apache helicopters would get sand in the intakes, how we'd have at least 20,000 casualties, how dangerous the freaking Republican Guard was; so, if it turned out to be a cakewalk for some, nobody knew that going into it. They were ready for the worst when they climbed into the cockpits or went through the berm...and they fucking annihilated the enemy.

So, for all of you involved in that conflict, thank you and salute.
