Failure/why you won't quit

Mainly talking to the wannabes here, though if any SOF want to share a story or tips of course it's welcome.

I see a lot of people saying they'll never quit. They'd never give up. They'd die trying etc. I'm not calling that into question at all I'm just curious as to what happened in your life or what caused you to have this mentality and what makes you think you'd never quit.

People say that because talk is cheap and they think it sounds good. The reality is, it's empty hyperbole, and has absolutely zero to do with making it through a selection. The people that really aren't going to quit just keep their mouths shut and grind it out day after day.

That was kind of what I was getting after. And a lot of times people will say things like that, when they've never been in a situation that really sucked as much as the things they are trying to face. (Myself included)

"Die before I quit" is so much bullshit. Yes, training has killed people, but how many have dropped? What's that ratio? It is a pure garbage statement, hollow chest-thumping from too many kids who read/ watch war porn and know nothing else about life. If you have to pump yourself with such thoughts, you're already behind the curve.

Failure sucks, and the next event is starting as the current one ends. The ORP and hot chow is just over the next hill. My Team is depending on me.

I always said I would die before I quit, Then I went to RASP and thought I was actually dying and long story short I quit. It is easy to say that you wont quit until you've been running so long, so fast with a ruck that you taste blood and can barely see anymore, and on top of that your body is chilling in 100 degree weather. I am not making excuses either. It was a lack of preparation on my part. If I had been in better shape and been more mentally prepared I would have made it, but I wasn't. To some this post up the "I'll die before I quit" type sayings are useless until you have been tested to that degree.

Failure? I fail all the time and often. There’s a lot to learn from failure if your mind is right. Quitting just sucks and isn’t something I’m willing to do.

Interesting anecdote, Col John Ripley used to select Marine officers from the bottom of a Naval Academy class because they had faced and overcome failure to graduate. Col Ripley was a Force Recon Marine and a member of the Ranger and SOCOM halls of fame. Captain John Ripley at the Bridge: "Please, God, Don't Let Me Screw This Up!" | Marine Corps Association

Damn... I've never even heard of him. That's amazing, and humbling. Thanks for sharing that info.

Ripley (along with Bill Dabney), was a living legend and one of my heroes. Some of the former Marine CoVans in my association, (Counterparts/Tuong Huu Dong Nam A) knew Col Ripley personally and attended his funeral in '08.
