Hey guys. Going down to Cali next week for some TCCC training with Secfor International. That training is part of a 42 day "High Threat Protection Specialist" pipeline. I only planned on attending the medical portion, but thinking about asking my Voc Rehab person if I could do the whole thing. Unlikely my current employer would be okay with me leaving for that duration, so I might potentially come out of it unemployed (but maybe more employable?)

I know some of these kinds of courses have been a rip in the past, so I wanted to know what the SS community thought of this training. How likely is it to make someone who is a combat veteran but has no special operations experience more employable in the security contractor industry? Or even possibly in federal law enforcement that has similar missions, such as US Marshals with their judicial security mission?

Law enforcement won't care, at least not during the hiring process.

Sure, hiring process for local LE is more about college education, work experience, etc. What about those federal agencies that have some sort of protection mission, ie US Marshals, Secret Service, DOS Diplomatic Security? Would it be, at least a factor? If they don't care during hiring, what about for potential opportunities after you're on board?

Coming from a family of federal LEOs, I posed this to a number of them, and they all responded it wouldn't provide any extra benefit in hiring. After they hire you, they train you to do the job you were hired for, so they don't care about a course such as this in terms of being a good fit. My cousin, USSS, said it may be detrimental during training if you need to "unlearn" a technique to meet the standards of the agency training.

The hiring process for LE at any level outside of working for Sheriff Andy doesn't care about any of that. It's a civil service process.

College counts insofar as the agency may have established it as a prerequisite for consideration, but the type of degree won't matter as long as it meets the year requirement (associate vs bachelor degree). However, that only gets your ass into the seat to take the test.

Getting hired in LE is all about making it through the civil service testing process, interviews (which generally are structured and don't score you on your past employment/training), psychological testing, background investigation w/poly, PT test (depending on agency), drug test, etc.

There is only one agency with a unit that I'm aware of that has a more particular pipeline that actually takes into account your past experience, and that is FBI HRT. However, unless you were SOF--and ideally, a member of a SMU--you aren't getting into that pipeline.

The only time past experience and training may help in most agencies is after you're hired and are looking for assignment to a specialty unit. That will be several years down the road. And of course, there will be a selection and training process for the unit, so.....

Thanks for the input, folks, I do really appreciate it. Looks like I'll stick with keeping my medical training up to date and call it a day!
