I created this account because I have to quite lurking, because finally I've hit questions that other people can't answer easily, and most can't answer at all. I am going to MEPS for the first time, and am excited/scared and most of all inquisitive. I've had friends in Regiment and Group, and I hate sounding like a fanboy and asking deep and penetrating questions of them. I like knowing motivations, and trying to figure out how to make good decisions, and that's why I created this account. Because I believe some of you may be able to help me make good decisions.

The list stuff: Two years Japanese, One year of Arabic, childhood experience with German and Spanish. BA Anthropology/History, MA Geography All But Thesis. Grew up at 8-9000 feet, love hiking and time in mountains and forest. Spent a decent amount of time overseas in and around various cultures. I'm trying to find a challenging way to bring all of my interests together.

I go to MEPS on Monday. Given my past scoring, and provided I test well on DLAB, open slots, schools, etc I'm planning on aiming for 35P/G/S (Cryptolinguist, Geospatial Analyst, Signals Collector) or 12Y (Geospatial Engineer). I was interested in Army Aviation (153A) as well, but the recruiter hasn't given me any info. I want to sign up for an Option 4/40 if those are available as well. My understanding is that there were some slots of 40 in the 35 series recently, so they may have dried up.

I had considered the air force, but at this point, due to age and options, the Army is preferable for me. I'm really only interested in SOF missions, and since all of my friends and my parents' colleagues are all CA, MISO/PSYOP, Ranger, SF types, that's all I have for role models. My knowledge of SOF missions in the Air Force is limited to PJ, SOW, and Tac air controllers, with very little available information on the role of officers in Special Tactics. My eyes are kind of crap, and my age is a little on the high side, and the Army offers (in my mind, maybe not in reality) more options in regards to MOS selection, and more 'interesting' slots, jobs, and schools. After MEPS physical, I'll have a better idea about what I can apply for, what I'll need waivers for.

Please correct any mistakes or misapprehensions I have, I quit my due diligence on the Air Force at the beginning of grad school.

I do however find it interesting that the Army will only offer me enlisted, and the Air Force will only offer me officer.

Welcome.

Not really. The draw down being what it is, the various branches will be in a transitional state for a few years. For the last decade they could more or less do what they wanted to with regards to personnel, but the times have changed. I would expect some ambiguities and "WTF?" moments in the next few years as manning, financing, and deployment levels are adjusted. We saw some weird things in the 90's for similar reasons.
