Keith Wells died last week. He was 94. As a young Marine 1st Lieutenant, Wells commanded 3rd Platoon, Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Marines, 5th MarDiv, one of the most highly decorated platoons in Marine Corps history.
It was the platoon that led the attack on Mt Suribachi and eventually raised the flag on the summit. Wells never made it to the top because he got hit on the way up. He was later awarded the Navy Cross.
Wells is featured prominently in a book called A Special Valor by Richard Wheeler, another member of Wells' platoon.
Just wanted to render a passing salute.
