I recently retired after 28 years total service, 24 of them commissioned (not all of us are bad ;-)) from the Army, both Active Duty and Reserves. I served in Infantry, Special Forces, Civil Affairs, Army Staff and Information Operations units. Spent time or passed through over 17 countries, mostly in Europe, but a fair number of them in South West Asia, too.

My best and most remembered years spent in the service were the ones I spent in SOF. Looking to find some of that camaraderie here, too.

Cheers,
Slipkid

Welcome, you were non tabbed sig officer in an SF unit, as such you need to change your avatar immediately. I think it is disingenuous to not state explicitly that you were not an 18A in your intro, which to me makes it seem like you were an 18A. Or in the least SF qualified. Most people who say they served in SF mean they were tabbed.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome...well, mostly all.

I don't see a Private Message (PM) feature, so I'll just do this live...

Wow...Having an avatar of John Wayne implies that I am an 18 series? Maybe this isn't the place for me after all. Good thing I didn't use one of Chuck Norris...

In my verification post I specifically stated that I was non tabbed. I served as an infantry officer in a signal slot in an SF unit. In my intro I covered the types of units I was in, not each MOS and Functional Area that I have qualifications in...didn't see that in the few pages of intros I previewed. Didn't seem like a requirement to post out 214s.

Didn't realize CSM Chris Raines hung out here. Came across the memorial threads. I did have the privilege of serving with him (and grabbing a smoke with him occasionally). I did attend, along with a bunch of folks, his funeral ceremony at Arlington.

So, again, thanks for the welcome.

Welcome to SS, sir.

FWIW...I also should opine that I took from your intro you were a long tabber. Since you served in those units, you undoubtedly know how those guys are about this kind of stuff, so in the future try to be more specific for everyone's clarity. Looking forward to your contributions here.

The impression I took away from your introduction, was that you were tabbed Special Forces. The avatar you selected, has a special meaning for some of us here, a bit of hallowed ground in some respects, if you will. Thank you for your many years of service, and again, welcome to SS. I hope you enjoy our site.

PSYOPS (or MILITARY INFORMATION SUPPORT OPERATIONS (MISO) these days) is but one of the 5 Pillars of Information Operations (IO). The pillars are: OPSEC, PSYOPS, MILDEC, EW, PD and CA/PA. Maybe the definition has changed since I did the FA30 course, but Computer Network Operations (CNO) is a pillar and CA/PA are supporting capabilities. From army dot com:

Branch: Functional Area
CMF: 30AO
MOS Details
Major Duties:
The Information Operations Officer is responsible for coordinating, planning and integrating both offensive and defensive Information Operations to gain information superiority in support of the commander's operational concept. Information Operations is integral to every phase of Army and joint planning and operations by linking operational security, psychological operations, deception, electronic warfare, and physical destruction with civil and public affairs capabilities.

Welcome.

What's an Information Operations unit?

In the USAR, IO units went from trying to do full spectrum IO (OPSEC, PSYOPS, MILDEC, EW, PD and CA/PA) to focusing primarily on Computer Network Operations (CNO). According to Joint Pub 3-13, CNO consists of computer network attack (CNA), computer network defense (CND) and computer network exploitation (CNE). Active Duty side, the focus is on both full spectrum and CNO focused efforts based upon organizational lines. See wikipedia for more details on 1st_Information Operations Command (Land). There were plans to build IO Groups in both the USANG and USAR, but I am not familiar with how far those efforts progressed.
