My Random TV Thread

For all our med peeps and anyone who enjoys a medical series, The Pitt might top the list for ER shows.

Very little "drama", heavily focused on the actual ER. Even brought some Pittsburgh/EMS history into the show by having a patient who was a Member of the Freedom House Ambulance Service.

Ironically, the family of Michael Crichton is suing, saying it's a knock-off of 'ER' and a violation of Crichton's contract. Honestly I think it's splitting hairs; I mean, are they going to sue every show about an ED in which Noah Wylie plays a role?

That said: I have not seen it (I don't get that channel) but am told it's the most realistic medical TV show on right now.

I tried to watch an episode. It wasn't my thing, but I understand a lot of people like these kinds of shows.

That said, if I didn't know any different, I would've thought I was watching the latest episode of ER. I don't know what that means in terms of contracts and lawsuits, but I certainly see the parallels.

Watched Rogan w/ director Peter Berg. Cool, down to earth guy and as a fan of manifest destiny, never gave much attention to this event/ period but sounds super interesting. Might be my next watch.

The Mountain Meadows massacre? I learned about it one day watching the History Channel in the front room on my Grand dad's TV.

As presented in that series, plus the physical distance between the show's locations, it leaves a lot to be desired. As entertainment, I thoroughly enjoyed the series.
Studying history, I'm now very cynical. I take everything as an intro and try to read and watch a lot of different shit in order to get some facsimile of truth. Imagine what they'll say about us and the times we live in. Lol.

Since we had a discussion about Shogun, I wanted to follow up with a blurb. Clavell basically took the story of William Adams and turned it into a novel. Many of Shogun's major story elements are Adams' story, in some cases almost verbatim.

William Adams (samurai) - Wikipedia

The Explorers podcast is doing a series on the guy and it is excellent.

Finally wrapped up season 2 of Lioness. Definitely have to do a little bit of “suspended belief“, but overall enjoyed it for a fun action/adventure war-porn type story.

Speaking of porn; started season 2 of 1923. A few episodes in and I’m out. Taylor Sheridan worked out his 14 year old teenage boy lesbian fantasies in Lioness, I don’t know what the fuck he’s trying to work out in the second season of 1923, but all of the rape and sexual violence on women, I just have too vivid of an imagination for that.

That shit didn’t bother me in Game of Thrones, maybe because it was literal fantasy. In 1923 it’s all too real, and there’s no enjoyment in watching the season so far. If Spencer ever gets his ass back to Montana and does some damage, maybe I’ll watch the last couple of episodes.

I get what he’s trying to do and the message he’s trying to send about the conditions of that era, but I have enough sadness and despair in my life right now, I sure as fuck don’t need to watch it on TV with no perceived expectation of a happy ending for any of these characters.

Sad part is, that was reality during that period of time.

The first episode of the new Daredevil is darker than Helen Keller's library. Two episodes in, it is a good series so far and the vast is killing it.

One complaint is it references storylines I missed from the last DD "season." I never watched it because the reviews weren't good, but apparently those details follow into this series. Something about a White Tiger?

Regardless, the first two episodes are very good and that first fight scene? Ho. Lee. Shit. A banger.
I started watching it and thought I would be a little lost since I didn't watch Daredevil. Sooooo....I have homework to do.

The Pitt is dope. 10/10.

The first...11 episodes are a slog, but the payoff is so worth it. But you'll want to carve out time for 12-14.

1923 series finale wrapped up today. Taylor Sheridan has no brake pedal.
I chose not to watch it. Season 1 was so good and everything I heard about season 2 was a complete train wreck. I know how it ends, but I’ll not give any spoilers yet.

In my cartoon bubble, Spencer and Alex got the happier ending most of us wanted for them.

1883 was a good story - but it just fell flat with its ending. I would have liked to see more of an 'establishment' story added to the backside of the 'trip westward' story. It just felt like they left out a lot of the origin story - having a "season 2" that did a better job of connect the story to '1923' would have been perfect.

1923 was the best story - start to finish - in the entire franchise -IMHO/YMMV

Yellowstone was going great - then the story line just got too 'villainous' for my tastes. They went from honorable family fighting the good fight to keep their family ranch - to what was pretty close to being an organized crime syndicate hiding just this side of law and order because of their choke hold on the "Montana Livestock Association" - not to mention how far off the rails things went in the last two seasons when Sheridan and Costner's little kerfuffle turned the final season into an absolute mess.

I remember when this got big. And then when the treasure was found but no real pictures came out believing the hype that the family paid someone to retrieve it (I’m still not necessarily convinced otherwise). But for 3 episodes it’s a good background show.
