My Random TV Thread

I can't remember seeing it in here but is anyone else watching The Man in the High Castle on Amazon Prime? They're working on season 3 now. Don't worry, it won't turn you into a racist Nazi. ;-)

Yes; I think it's one of the better series of the last 10-20 years.

Just finished Ozark.. Pretty great.

I had people telling me to watch this for a few weeks and finally binged it this Labor day weekend. Definitely worth it. Also, it was renewed for a second season.

Please give me a series to begin watching on the treadmill every morning. No comedies, I want a drama series of some type. In a perfect world it would be a cross between Fauda (still one of my absolute favorites), The Unit (without the wife/girlfriend drama) and maybe 24. Subtitles are okay, I'll be on the treadmill. Ideally available on Netflix or Amazon Prime.

I don't watch much TV and this isn't military based, but the first season of True Detective had me entranced. The second isn't good, so I'd skip that. Each series is a new storyline and world.

The first season was weird, dark and compelling. I really enjoyed Mathew McConaughey's performance, but both lead actors did a great job. There's a scene where McConaughey's character, Rustin Cohle, goes assassin-like, so maybe that implied he had some sort of special background. Mostly, he's over-analytical, obsessive and eccentric. I was especially satisfied with how it ended.

Otherwise, if you can tolerate a reality series and haven't seen it, you can always try:
The Selection: Special Operations Experiment Full Episodes, Video & More | HISTORY

This is one of the few series I was able to fully watch on the cross trainer. The monotony passed quicker watching others working harder than you. I know you said no comedy and it might seem like toy level special ops training to you, but I found it interesting.

Happy treadmilling!

I was recently recommended Graceland. Any feedback on that show?

Handmaids Tale.

Comrade Detective is pretty funny. I'm not sure the central conceit holds up for as long as the show goes but if you know anything about communism and police procedurals it's pretty biting satire. It purports to be a Romanian propaganda 'cop show' from the 1980s now dubbed into English. They play it straight the whole time and it's very funny (to me) to see them send up how the communist state officially saw the US, all the while praising their shithole. There's a bunch of scenes where everybody is constantly enjoying soup (the best soup in the world), watching chess on TV like the NFL, and talking about how their shitty cars are the greatest machines in the world.

I call it "bubblegum TV." Not the best, but entertaining if you suspend disbelief for the show. Suits is the same: entertaining (but the women are much more attractive) and it draws you in, but doesn't have the excitement/ suspense of other series. I enjoyed the show.

Huh.

Thought this was pretty interesting...Hal Linden talks about why Barney Miller ended when it did, and gave some insight as to why great shows eventually fizzle out.

I loved Barney Miller, and he is right, it was never canceled.

ETA. In listening to people involved with the big screen and TV, the difference was the writer and director's importance.

On the big screen, the director was the one who made the difference in the success of the film. On the small screen, the writer was the key, and not so much the director.

I think it had to do with pacing. And you're right.

Decided to watch America's Got Talent this season. The dudes from the Air Force Academy "In the Stairwell" are great; made it to the live rounds....

Yes she is amazing. I also really liked the magician that "walked" through glass. Preacher Lawson the comedian. That weird mentalist Colin Cloud. The girl that survived the plane crash. The dancing kid, Merrick. So many good ones.

- The mentalist dude is spooky.
- Plane crash girl is good, but not "that" good. I submit she never would have been put through without her backstory
- I like the dancing robot kid. He tells a story.

The tiny little Asian girl, Celine? Holy f'ing shit do I hate her. Mom and dad have been telling her how great she is all of her short little life, and brother....she believes it.

I have pure hate for everything Celine Dion, including that little girls parent's. I dont hate her, it's all her parents fault she turned out how she did.
