My Random TV Thread

I did read that Scorcese is already working/ looking at another series.

I'm on board with a 3 - 5 year run for any series. You can have a fresh plot, character development , and a good story arc in that length. After 5 years a series feels bloated as writers look for a plot to keep their cash cow afloat.

Finished up the first season of House of Cards and started the second last night. I'm hooked.

Started "Rescue Me"... Good first season, really good actually. Fades off though and now I can't get through season 5. It's a lot like "Californication" and "Dexter"in the sense it starts strong enough to keep you locked in for a few more seasons before you realize the writers never heard of character development.

Encore is currently running Salem's Lot. That was one movie that scared the ever livin' hell out of me throughout my childhood.

And yes, I've got Smallish Child and Roomie's Child camped out watching it for the first time. }:-) :-" :sneaky:

Blacklist. Some of the script writing begs for leavening but James Spader's character is enough to keep you hooked until the twists and turns start going on. The character development on Season 1 so far is pretty decent.

Been watching American Horror Story. It's not bad, but I've never been much of a fan of the horror genre. The g/f likes it though, which means we're watching it. :whatever:

I've tried it and The Walking Dead because the girls like them. Um, no. I've seen better acting at a morning sick call and a better story in a music video.

Breaking Bad did an excellent job of keeping characters fresh and a good story plot. Same thing with The Sopranos. Do some series need to end after 5 seasons (let alone one)? Of course, but with good writers and a creative director, a series can have a long and successful run.

BB was only 5 seasons long and I think even the Sopranos were running out of gas. Sure, TV series can run past 5 seasons and stay fresh, but doing so is a long shot. They devolve into a predictable formula or you have some questionable "filler" in the plot. I love Sons of Anarchy, but if it were trimmed by a season or 2 nothing would suffer. It depends on how they want to structure the story and characters.

6 season's, but who's counting? :p

IIRC, Breaking Bad was written with a specific course and a relatively well-defined ending (at least in concept, not necessarily in detail). Which means by season 5-6, it was on a final trajectory and they weren't just writing to see how long they could ride that pony.

The second incarnation of Battlestar was much the same way; details varied, but driving that show into a certain endstate helped it from becoming another "let's get lost in space and fight things and stuff" show.

The "5 seasons" length doesn't have to be a hard and fast rule, but riding shows out purely for the sake of milking as much money as possible just drives them to suck. Same as making sequel after sequel after sequel of the same movie...

I am not arguing that it didn't end as planned, only that it was written well enough that it could have gone on for more than five seasons. I just used BB as a specific example. Let's just hope 'Better Call Saul' is as good of a show.

Been watching Scandal and I don't know if I've ever hated a TV character more than I hate Olivia Pope.

I have been watching it since the beginning and, based on this season's first episode only, it didn't meet the standard set by the two previous seasons. But I am hopeful the rest of the season will be better when Melli and Olivia start going at it again.

I have heard a lot of good stuff about Breaking Bad. Think I am going to give it a whirl on Netflix.
