I'm a Senior in HS looking to go Recon but I have one problem. I have no pools near me that I could swim in without paying outrageous prices at my local gym. $95 a month. I can't just swim in a river or lake because I live in Alaska. I researched that I could do workouts like flutter kicks, pull-ups, push-ups, etc. Do you think this would prepare me a bit for BRPC and BRC without actually being in the water.

Unfortunately no.

What you need to do in the pool is much more technique development than conditioning. There's nothing you can do out of the water that will make you better once you get into it.

Do you have a part time job? Perhaps get one in the gym that has a pool. Or find someone that can bring you in as a guest. Also check non-public local school swim teams. Very often they have open lap swim times where you can go swim for an hour or two for three bucks.

I would pay the money. I'm am not recon or any special kind of pip hitter but I have spent years physically training, in preparation to be one. Nothing helped me get better at swimming more than swimming. And trust me your going to need to be very good at "swimming". I know 95 dollars might seem like a lot, but if you use the heck out of it will. It will pay the bills when the rubber hits the road.

Pool time is key brother, unfortunately for you it sounds like you're gonna have to chuck up the 95 bucks a month if you can. Like these guys said, nothing helps more than actual swim time especially for building that initial foundation for technique. Even more so with Recon which is such a water eccentric pipeline. It's worth the money to get in the pool to develop a Combat Side stroke technique that is effective for you, as well as treading amongst other important things. On a side note, myself being a concerned Corpsman, careful with your technique on flutter kicks and such; it would be a shame to start the lower back pain before your real journey even begins.:D Best wishes man.
