Star Wars - ** SPOILERS ** discussion thread

I respectfully disagree, @Tbone. Han/Leia may have come across as awkward, but show me a moment when two divorcees run into each other after years where it ISN'T awkward. Trust me on this, I've been divorced before. I was disappointed that they split, but I have no control over that.

As far as a social agenda, do you really think that Mace Windu and Lando Calrissian were the only black people in the universe? Because aside from the race issue, I'm not seeing anything, and I'm a devout supporter of men's rights. I'll throw a feminist up under the bus and drive the follow on steam roller my damn self. Unless you're pissed about Phasma, but she's supposed to be a bitch, and I'll bet a lot of people cheer if she eats a blaster shot.

I agree that Kylo Ren was an emo bitch, but I'm not going to write him off until I see how/if he matures as a villain in future episodes.

I don't see any hidden agendas in this movie, to be frank, outside of escaping reality for fun and profit.

I generally agree with your POV accept my main PC issue was not with Finn(who was the most endearing character for me) and or race, but with how overpowered Rey was made to be. I will probably end up liking this movie after watching it a hundred times, but I will always remember how disappointed I was at the theatre.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Rey's family. I really hope they are totally unrelated to the Skywalker clan. I despise stories with too much inbreeding. It's a space opera for cryin' out loud! Space operas by definition have casts of characters that ae huge. There's got to be more than just the Skywalker family that's got a thing with da Force! I mean how in the world did they have all those other Jedi in the past?

LL

Jedi fuck like bunnies.

Honestly, I don't think that has anything to do with feminism. They probably would've done it that way if Rey was male. And looking back, Anakin was kind of overpowered, too. He managed to fly all the way through a blockade and take out the flagship of the CIS blockade when he wasn't even 10, yet. Granted, he didn't ever have to use a lightsaber like Rey did, but still, at least as far as the pilot thing goes, it's already happened in Star Wars.

You are upset the main character was an empowered female with the force flowing through her?

I get that it is fantasy and not science fiction, but looking up in the sky and seeing the laser overhead from every planet was just retarded. Those planets were supposed to be in the same galaxy not the same system IE hundreds to millions of light years apart. Other than that I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I just got back from seeing it a second time. I figure the reason Rey knew so much about the Millenium Falcon was because she was left with Unkar Plutt as a toddler. That means she most likely was right there with him when he made all those changes and bypasses to the Falcon's systems. I came to that conclusion when she was talking to Solo, and every time something was off it was because "Unkar Plutt did ..." How do we know he didn't teach her, or she watched closely enough to sort it out herself?

As far as calling Han the father she never had, he's likely either her father (she's Ben/Kylo's twin) or her uncle. There's a bond there, just she doesn't know quite what it is. If Han's her uncle, that means Luke's her father, and we all know how strong Luke is with the force. Hell, her grandfather was spontaneously conceived of the force. That genetic lineage lends itself to unbelievable power in the Star Wars universe. Why wouldn't she be powerful once she's figured out she can use it? Latent power and the ability to sort it out herself makes her dangerous, but not a third wave feminist concession.

Now I'm REALLY anxious for the next movies.

Yeah it isn't feminist that she is awesome, it is just the progression. I think it is awesome that some scavenger from nowhere can be a badass, shows that girls don't have to be princesses to be awesome.

All I'm saying is she wasn't just "awesome", she was insta-jedi sith defeating chosen one awesome. So I think for continuity's sake she needs to turn out to be the greatest jedi ever. Anything less and it would do her abilities in this movie an injustice.

It states that Ren, Hux and captain phasma got off the planet before it went up.. Surely this is the case for Solo?

If you mean Ben Solo, then yes, as that was Kylo Ren's given name before he fell in with Snoke. If you're talking about Han, then there's no way possible. He's dead, and there was no time to recover his body before the planet blew to bits.

I find your lack of faith in the Force... disturbing....

Watched a video that suggested that Rey might be from Kenobi's bloodline. Will be interesting to see how that turns out because I think most people are suggesting that she is a Skywalker

Just saw the movie and have to say, I agree with a lot of the hate here. This movie was (as I was worried) extremely overrated. The hype surrounding this film did not live up to itself at all. Essentially, Lord of the Rings in space with blasters and shitty science. However, let me start off with the Pros instead of the Cons.

Pros: It was a well made movie. In contrast to the CGI/Anime/cartoonish feel of the prequel trilogy, this movie felt much more visceral, much more grounded and real as a viewer. Ford did a fantastic job as Solo. He came in there and killed it. Finn, Rey, and BB8 were all excellent additions to the Star Wars verse, as was their interactions with each other and their predecessors. Personally, I was worried about the whole black stormtrooper thing because they were all supposed to be clones if you only followed the movies for canon information. However, they explained it perfectly that the troopers were humans stolen while young. Very good job on integrating the change from clone to human soldiers. All in all it was an enjoyable movie when you ignored the whole Force loopholes and magic fails. Personally, I would rank it above the prequels, but below the originals for sure.

Cons: Hype Hype Hype. They hyped up the trooper captain to be this badass, but she gets caught and tossed into the trash. Fisher was fucking horrible. I wanted to falcon punch her every single time she came on screen. A super duper death weapon that physically sucks up a sun? C'mon, at least make it somewhat believable, that had zero basis in reality. As mentioned earlier, how did a never trained Jedi, beat down a former Jedi trained under Skywalker, a current Sith, and supposed successor to Vader? The crossbow shot? Bullshit, he was more than capable of doing some voodoo force magic to knock her out as he did before. Only reasonable explanation is he got cocky and was toying with them. I can suspend belief enough to think she is a naturally gifted pilot, and was able to pickup the controls for the Falcon fairly quickly. Even more unbelievable, is a former sanitation trooper using his mop handling skills to stand toe to toe with before mentioned Sith trainee. Even given hand to hand combat training, he would not have stood a chance for as long as he did.

My guess is that Rey is the daughter of Luke based on her interaction with the light saber. That might account for how quickly gifted she became, as she would be a direct descendant of a trained Jedi, versus a descendant of someone who has untapped Jedi power. Might also explain why Ren was fucking with her in the forest instead of killing her, or forcefully extracting the info to where it would hurt her. I think he might have held back when interrogating her.

Overall, I get that this movie appeals to the little boy inside all of us that wanted to swing swords and travel through space. Hell, it combines two cool things into a giant space opera. That doesn't mean care should not be taken when crafting these movies, and they should be held to a higher standard. Oh, and fuck JJ. In ST and SW, he was not needed to rekindle interest in either saga. Both are timeless, and will generally stand the test of time.
