Star Wars - ** SPOILERS ** discussion thread

Cons: Hype Hype Hype
Hype only works when it doesn't deliver. Sure the trailers hit certain aspects of the movie that didn't deliver and I think some of the comedy was contrived, but the movie itself obviously did deliver. $1 billion in the first 10 days says that all the haters are just hating to hate. Movie wasn't perfect, but it was good enough
The movie was built to prepare us for the next episodes. The original star wars had an uncertain future, so they had to contain as much as possible into the film

Even more unbelievable, is a former sanitation trooper using his mop handling skills to stand toe to toe with before mentioned Sith trainee
This is a great line, I am guaranteed to use it at least once this week and regrettably will give you zero writing credit.

Oh, and fuck JJ. In ST and SW, he was not needed to rekindle interest in either saga.
I disagree. Both Star Trek and Star Wars needed an immediate shock-to-the-heart to get people excited again. Not just "hesitantly looking forward to the new movie" excited, but "I'M FUCKING BUYING MY RESERVED SEAT TWO MONTH'S IN ADVANCE!!!" excited. Producers took a chance on JJ for Star Trek because of the new energy he put into Mission Impossible - for the most part fans loved the new Trek (throwing cannon out the window and lens flare aside).

As I recall there were online petitions asking that he be hired for the Star Wars films, and I can tell you first hand that it was his involvement that caused me to be one of those guys who bought tickets in advance. I've been fooled by previews in the past, there was no way I was going to take that chance again. I'll never forget sitting in the theater seeing the preview for Phantom Menace - they made it look SO bad ass. Battles, battalions of storm troopers, it looked so cool! Then I went to the movie and got Jar-Jar..."Yipee!"...and "Roger-Roger." I still remember walking out at the end, trying to convince myself that I liked it. The same feeling after the next two. Bottom line, Disney needed HYPE and trust that they were going to do this right...I think the past six months will go down as a Master-Jedi lesson in movie marketing - the hiring of the right director included.

I remember seeing things on people suggesting that JJ would be great to direct star wars, but followed it up that he wouldn't be considered because of star trek. Even JJ said that he didn't want to do it because of how much of a fan he is. I recall Harrison Ford being in an interview and saying that this is the first time that the fandom was able to create something.
There's another interview from the early 80s with Mark Hamill that described a conversation with Lucas on when considering the rule of Skywalker, if Mark would be available to pass on the torch to the next Jedi in about 30 years or so. That's pretty cool and unfortunately it wasn't going to happen with the direction that Lucas's vision alone could accomplish. It had to be a movie formed by committee and played safe.

I really don't get the major criticism of the Finn/Rey v Kylo Ren lightsaber duel.

You're talking about a series of movies where Luke Skywalker defeated one of the most powerful Sith Lords to have ever lived having recieved training from Obi Wan using a blaster droid and training from a version of Yoda who Lucas claimed didn't use a lightsaber?

There has to be some suspension of belief here. At least JJ Abrams had the decency to actually have Kylo be blasted by a bowcaster and showed that Kylo was an irrational, petulant hothead who was still very raw in terms of training. Not to mention the fact that he dispatched Finn easily once he decided he was finished toying with him.

There's certainly some criticisms to be made of the film but the Finn/Rey vs Kylo is making a mountain out of a molehill.

People complaining about the science of Star Wars? Seriously? A planet sucking the energy from the sun isn't even the most unbelievable part. Midi Chlorians, the force, stopping bullets, communicating across galaxies, light speed travel, artificial gravity in every spaceship? You don't go into Star Wars expecting Interstellar, at least I hope not.

Goddamn right science. No reasonable person is expecting Interstellar, but goddamn a planet sucking up a star? Horesefuck.

midichlorians = the force, stopping bullets can be somewhat believable if the force is able to manipulate gravity/physics, communication is between systems and not galaxies, light speed travel has a basis in reality (thanks for the science Star Trek), and artificial gravity isn't a stretch.

@x SF med that's the problem, it is billed as scifi when it is not. How many here saw some military movie or Hollywood gunfight and called bullshit? Did they sit back and say "oh it's cool just a flick" I am willing to bet no lol. I at least gave several positive points of the movie. More than I was expecting to find. I think my review is a fair and accurate accounting from my perspective. Biased, but a good attempt at being fair. ;-)

Just saw it, not at a drive in but in a theater,in 3D. I think they did a very good job, looking at it as a reboot. Won't really comment on the storyline as I'm not a fan. Visually though, I was afraid it'd have the Michael Bay effect of cramming too much shit in every shot, and coupled with 3D,my expectation was I'd get a splitting headache.
Not so, the look of the sets, creatures and characters was in line with the first 3 movies and the space battles and chases looked terrific.
Now.
Dude playing Kylo Ren looks like an emo-goth who hit the gym, but is underwhelming. I'd have preferred for Phasma to take off her helmet. As for the Finn character, I suppose he showed us that stormtrooper lives matter, although not quite sure how.
Wife loved it.

Who cares. There is straight up inter species love happening in the series. Also without a Judeo Christian set of values to judge by who gives a fuck if two dudes want to get nasty.

I need to work on my sarcasm. That was supposed to be a light hearted jab at the seriousness some of the Star Wars talk has taken. Fin makes it pretty clear in the movie that he is interested in Rey (like asking her if he has a boyfriend).

This is the disagree part, The numbers put forth do not indicate it living up to the hype. Jersey Shore was also uber popular at one point, but that didn't mean it was good. The high numbers are for the hype built up around it. It was made mainstream and therefore popular among the unwashed masses. So everyone had to see it. Any of us recall those classmates near us that made fun of those that were into Star Wars? Where are they now? In line to see this and the next one, claiming to be "long time fans".

The movie certainly was not bad. In fact, it was closer to Star Wars than the prequel (which I also didn't have too much of a problem with from an entertainment context).

You sound like a fair weather star wars fan

You're obfuscating with the Jersey Shore reference.

Hype is typically only mentioned as a pejorative, as in relating to its negative performance at the box office. The box office is absolutely the best indicator for a movie not performing to its hype because the sales will reflect if there is any continued interest. Think movies like Speed Racer that completely flopped in the theater and had an crazy hype around it. I'm sure if you did some google searching for hyped movies you will see what the consensus is.

Hype doesn't create numbers that are better than any past movie in an off season.

Nice. Paint with a broad brush much?

Original argument still stands. Try again.

So.. What is your argument? That the movie's hype is setting the numbers alone?

At what point would you say that the movie isn't being dictated by hype?

Highest grossing opening weekend ever didn't cut it for you.

I'm guessing what you mean is that you didn't manage your own expectations and I can absolutely understand that. Other than the Martian and Interstellar, not much has lately for me.

That dude was just waiting for a chance to fight a Jedi. It is like that dude that carries a hatchet for 3 deployments then gets to stab a taliban in the head with it.

There isn't a doubt in my mind that storm trooper had a boner the whole fight.

So this dude has a legitimate backstory!

The canonical story behind TR-8R, the internet's new favorite stormtrooper
