Ted Williams, Marine Corps pilot

One of the things that made Williams a great hitter was his phenomenal eyesight, which served him equally well as a pilot.

Nice article. I actually met him in a Publix Supermarket Deli in Wesley Chapel FL a few years before his death. I recognized him instantly even though he was in his early 80s because I'd seen him on TV quite a few times in his later years.

He was alone, sitting at a table eating a sub. I learned later that his daughter lived nearby.

As I was leaving I walked by and said: "Semper Fi, Ted."

He nodded, smiled and replied, "They make a good sandwich here." :D
