The Trump Presidency 2.0

California is wild. Swalwell somehow not only avoids prison after banging and likely leaking classified information to his Chinese honeypot, but becomes to valuable to the California Dems that he was the frontrunner for the Gubernatorial election...his party locked ranks around him and protected him. Also, he's had sexual assault allegations before, they got buried. But this is what takes this piece of human excrement down? hilarious.

They distracted us from Epstein with Iran and are now distracting us from Iran with Epstein. So anyways...I started cycling. What an expensive sport.

Once upon a time (1998) I had a mid-upper tier mountain bike (Gary Fisher) and road bike (Trek). Those bikes are now a fraction of what they were. An entry level bike can be a grand. To tell you how long ago that was disc brakes weren't a thing, 99% of mountain bikes were still hard tails, and there were only two front shocks, Manitou and RockShox. XTR was the best componentry. Now those are cheap.

Never really liked road biking but I loved mountain biking.

I had a whole long write-up about the expenses needed and needless regarding cycling, but I didn't want to derail the thread this morning. Now here we are, talking about aliens from not Area-51 mountain biking because the road is unsafe. Thanks Barry.

We have a thread somewhere about the topic if our Mod wants to dig into the past.

I'd looked at getting back into mountain biking, but I don't think my pinched nerves and discs would appreciate the hobby.

I hope its more that people don't give a fuck about Iran and Epstein didn't go away.

I'm a firm believer that you need about a decade after a president leaves office before you can really rate his/ her successes or failures. For all of the wailing and gnashing of teeth over Trump's actions I think history will view him more with "good initiative, poor judgement" on many of his policies. The handling of Epstein so far, and hiring of Bondi and Patel, those will go down as massive L's on the scoreboard.

That said we have 3 years to go on his tenure and 13 before we hit that decade so who knows what will happen?

I support a lot of what he has done. Even in Iran, I have no love. Their government sucks worse than ours and slowing down production of Nukes isn't a bad thing. Wiping out a civilization simply because people happen to live there is another thing. My problem with this administration is all wrapped up in the fact that Trump was elected because of two major campaign promises and both were straight up lies. As soon as he won, he said "stop talking about Epstein" and "my friends are going to get hurt." No, fuck that.

You mean the rape and sexual assault of minors (I can't get on board with the murder narrative, but it could be true...who knows?) is a bad thing? Weird...

Seriously, I love a lot of what he's done but not how he's done it. I guess to some that makes me a RINO or have TDS to criticize the man, but whatever. I get real uneasy when we start putting anyone on a pedestal or subscribe to a cult of personality and the far extremes of our political system have done that, consciously or not.

I'd add the government cuts and not just because I'm Gov. I think it was necessary but handled poorly. The DOGE staff...Jesus, what a dumpster fire. Just so poorly handled. Nuking USAID was the high water mark. It is quite obvious most of the cuts were just cutting to cut, not targeted pruning. No off ramp for most positions, a lot of institutional knowledge was lost. Before anyone says "deep state or "cry harder" or agrees...we lost technical knowledge in those fields, people gaming the system will always remain. Broad cuts meant years of expertise were gone overnight.

I don't expect most of this board to agree with my take above, or maybe this post, but every one of us can do the right thing in the wrong manner. Are you still a good person? Do you still have good ideas? Are you still a positive example? Yes, of course. You can still be a good member of your family or friend and fall short in many areas of your life, that doesn't make you a turd or immune to criticism. We are all flawed and no one, I do mean no one, is perfect.

So why are so many people out there buying into the nonsense that Trump or Obama or whoever do not warrant criticism and their politics are flawless?

People have recency bias. Look at almost any poll of a 'best of' or 'worst of' anything: presidents sports teams, movies, whatever.

Trump has done things I love, and things I hate. I have never unconditionally and 100% agreed with anything any president has done.

I'm always up to be critical. Ask my wife, providing criticism is like a sport for me.

But think with some of the topics we've traded jabs on being critical of Trump on this board hasn't dug into the granular pieces of WHY.

DOGE Worked in a lot of ways, but then you know the Congress critters going "you can't do that, we authorized the funding". Yeah, but the executive is charged to execute and if he thinks he can execute with less he should. The government is a bit too large to make surgical cuts, I saw on twitter yesterday about how State used to have a department that targeted program to combat propaganda...but then the response was that was like well yeah, but conservative organizations had to sue the Biden administration because they turned that sub-department onto domestic organizations. Just like they did the IRS.

Why Trump did "the thing" or why are Royal We are critical or both?

One other item quite a few of us recognized here is how do you drain the swamp without using people who know how the swamp works? How do you execute transformative ideas with a total outsider? You need people with a certain amount of inside knowledge, but how do you find those people who aren't tainted by the system?

Fair question. I don't know. But as we saw from his first administration, the swamp is full of people who are the deep state who will act only in the interests of the deep state and not the duly elected and appointed officials over them. It just so happens that they resist the Republican led administrations the most at this juncture. Don't know how you drain effectively without a Congress that wants an effective government.
