US carrier to visit Vietnam...

That's a butt-load of penicillin and other antibiotics the Navy is going to use. Hmm, I wonder if the contract is on fedbizops...

I can think of a hundred ways to approach this topic, most of them pretty funny. I think I'll save the humor for now.

The time is right for this. Historically the Vietnamese have stung the Chinese the several times the two countries have fought. So from a psych-war standpoint it's a smart move. And it helps tighten the strategic encirclement of the PRC, a plan that's been in the works for some years.

Plus you've got the Mad Dog diplobroing in Hanoi. If I were the Chinese I'd be so concerned the yellow river would be flowing in my pants.

So I brought up in a thread a while back my distaste for US-Vietnamese military relations. In that thread a lot of people brought up cogent thoughts that I had not considered, and I have since changed my mind. I agree, this is good for so many reasons (some of which you bring up).

Ancient history to most people...something VN vets have to come to terms with, even those of us who still have the reruns playing in our heads. I like the Vietnamese, fought beside them and fought against them, and I'd rather have them all on our side. They are a graceful, resourceful and extremely resilient people...and historically very good at making war. I just wish they'd shrug off Communism. They've relaxed things a bit since the re-education camps, but they still have a long way to go. Maybe partnering with the US/India/Japan/Australia will be a catalyst for some political change.
