I watched an interview a few years ago with an old Jewish man who was in a concentration camp, but also made HI-lareous Jewish jokes. The interviewer asked something like, "doesn't that make you uncomfortable or a hypocrite?" The man's answer was "when we were in the camp, the only thing we could laugh at was ourselves."
My DNA is pretty vanilla but I do have small (single digit) percentage of sub-Saharan African DNA, which some people give me grief for (given that .80% of my DNA is Finnish, English, and other Scandinavian). I can joke about that,
Looking at the background of the best comedians, the best joke's come out of suffering. It's no different than dark humor among our communities, military, law enforcement, fire, EMS, medical and so on.
