I think people have forgotten the US wasn't the way it is today. Nobody wanted to be reminded of the war or its fighters. I never got an answer on a resume for a job interview until I removed the four years of my military time and I was employed the following week.
This statement is how everybody felt back then " I liked it even though it was for the Vietnam era." The entire country was down on the military and what it did.
