My memory isn't all that good - plus I am hypocritically biased as well as shamelessly attracted to the beauty of whataboutism...
...but I absolutely reject any idea that the media tried to "bring down" Bill Clinton.
The media was very much invested in the mantra that "this was a private matter between a man and his wife"
That bald obnoxious cajun fucker even wrote a book called "And the Horse He rode in On" as all of the mainstream media outlets painted Ken Starr as the worst joke ever perpetrated against the American public.
And then 10 "republicans" agreed - when it came time to impeach Bill Clinton and complete 'the takedown'.
Nothing will happen to Hunter because the democrats will not ALLOW anything to happen to Hunter. Should the republicans somehow gain just enough power to 'threaten' Hunter - the democrats will threaten to leak the truth about republicans and the republicans will do what they do EVERY time - slink away quietly.
Democrats have always been democrats.
They will always "BE" democrats.

It's hard to imagine a cartoon villain more dirty than that guy. If he were in a movie, no one would believe someone who did what he did was still walking around not only free, but apparently still engaging in shenanigans.
-got kicked out of the Navy for drug abuse
-cheated on his spouose by banging his dead brother's wife
-hopelessly addicted to drugs
-left a crack pipe and his driver's license in a rental car when he turned it in
-abandoned a laptop full of incriminating evidence at a repair shop
-impregnated a stripper, who eventually had his child
-regularly used his familial connections to unlawfully enrich himself
-acted as the agent of a foreign power on multiple occasions
-committed a federal gun crime
-selling his art work to people who end up working for his father's administration or who want influence with it
^and probably lots of other things that I forgot. And these are just the things that we know about.

I was listening to a news cast about this situation while I was making dinner. He's getting hemmed up for tax evasion, but for what? What did he get all of that money for in the first place? I think it's pretty clear at this point that it was for public corruption. That's what he needs to get prosecuted for. Him, and his father.
Sometimes, we only get them for the tax fraud, not the underlying crime. I want to get him for the corruption, but sometimes tax fraud is the only one you can conclusively prove (to a jury in a courtroom). That beyond a reasonable doubt requirement can be a high bar. Happens with gangsters and drug dealers the country over, though usually with a felony, not a misdemeanor.
That non-felony part is what really stings for me.
But we're not even TRYING to get him/them for the underlying crime... which is a genuine "high crime and/or misdemeanor," unlike what they got President Trump on. Twice.
I think the evidence they have on hand is pretty damning, and that's probably without going through the whole discovery process.
I also think part of the reason they want to rush this thing through--in addition to dodging serious charges--is to have everything done before the next election, because President Biden can just pardon him.
I don't disagree with you. But, playing devil's advocate here...
Even if you bring those charges, lay it all out, and put it before a jury I don't know that you get a guilty verdict back. I'm not advocating this outcome, nor would I want it.
However, given the current climate in this country, I think it would be very hard to get ALL 12 jurors to be impartial and convinced to convict. The evidence is one thing, but in that jury box, each individual gets a vote, and they all need to agree. Sadly, that rests with the lowest common denominator. And, that denominator is pretty low, and easily manipulated to believe it's a witch hunt. For instance, the media which has tainted the ever living crap out of this.
I'm disgusted by the whole thing. I don't like it, and I wish I could believe that justice would be metted out. Maybe I'm disillusioned, but I don't see it happening.
Should we still try? Yes, I feel we should, and thereby do the right thing. But, that will only happen if the book/podcast/fame deal is the right value afterwards. Sadly.

Charge him for the big shit, and then if it doesn't pan out, go after him for the bullshit charges.
Conspiracy is a different charge than tax evasion so (I think? IDK, I'm not a lawyer) that double jeopardy would not attach and they could go after him on that at a different time.
But you also don’t want to overreach. That’s how Casey Anthony walked. FL charged and tried her for 1st degree murder, but couldn’t make it stick.
Any case prosecuting high level Dems: Wish in one hand, shit in the other. See which one fills up first.

This reminds me of the time that one judge wouldn't let the government drop the charges against Flynn.
Hunter paid next to zero taxes in 2015-2018 while pulling in about $17.5M in income. Couple that with him flying prostitutes from Cali to NY and claiming "business expenses", which he did a shit ton of times, and that's where the tax evasion and fraud comes from.
The whistleblowers and the laptop are essentially triangulating and corroborating each other, and when you roll in the findings of the oversight committee, it's getting real, real sporty.
And all of this has nothing to do with Joe's claims of "I never knew anything about Hunter's business dealings, zero!"- which we know is a straight up lie. Hunter put Joe on the phone when he wanted clout for deals. KJP has now changed her tune to, "Joe was never *in* business with Hunter!... those are two very, very different statements.
