My Random TV Thread

1883, prequel to Yellowstone. Finishing the binge watch with Maria.

WTF, the fucking heart strings....
Watched the first episode on the airplane last weekend. I shouldn't have. Now I need to get Paramount+ to watch the rest of the series.

Separately, I watched the Amanda Knox documentary tonight on Netflix. It's interesting. I very loosely paid attention to it at the time. If you needed any more convincing as to the power of a corrupt or unscrupulous media, look no further than this case. However, inept investigators and prosecutors were clearly the core problem.

I just saw an add during the DEN v SEA football game that it is on HBO Max as well if you have that service.

Sins of our Mother, a little three-part banger of a doco on Netflix about Lori Vallow. You may remember the story from a few years ago of the kids who went missing, the mom, her new husband, the deaths or their spouses, and the mom refusing to tell anyone about the kids. Big national story for AZ and MT.

1. Well done series. Very good source material, interviews, information, my only gripe is that the timeline was a bit hard to follow.
2. Anyone in her life who could not see the descent into full-blown crazy is an idiot. To her credit, she knew how to work people. Speaking of...
3. 5 marriages is a "you" thing, sweetie.
4. 3 episodes totaling less than 3 hours of screen time. Perfect.

Dahmer on Netflix. Ugh...dogshit. Slow, slow, plodding, slow, slow...

From the guy that brought you American Horror Story. They set the vibe well, just very, very creepy. The colors, tones, the off-putting dull inflection for many characters' voices gives you a nice atmosphere, but the story? Slow...like an 80 year old running back in the NFL slow. Marine on a math test slow. A turtle swimming in molasses slow. You have this dreary, creepy, SLOOOOWWWWWWW story taking place, so what to do about it?

Gore. Lots of gore. Unnecessary gore. "Game of Thrones asked you what the fuck is wrong with you" gore. Head in a fridge, barrel of body parts, road kill dissection, dismemberment, Polaroids of dismemberment, playing with innards, pig dissection...

And that's in the first three episodes.

Dahmer's story is creepy. Gory. Disgusting. We all know this and on a certain level we want to see SOME of that shit, but this? Nah. Not me. I'll pass. YMMV.

House of Hammer on Discovery+. Another little 3 banger doco, this being about Armand Hammer and his family though primarily focused on Armie Hammer. Armie you may remember was the "cannibal" actor outed a year or two ago by his own texts and social media.

I thought it was generally well done, very detailed, with numerous interviews, including an estranged member of the Hammer family. I wish it spent more time focused on Armand's Communist ties (at least it admitted his name is derived from the Communist symbols), but it at least they weren't glossed over; more detail would have been nice. Another ding is how they portrayed Armie in the first episode. It took a bit too long IMO to separate his behavior from actual BDSM (which involves consent, something alien to Armie) and how he used "kinky" sex as a cover for just being a monster.

If you don't want to shell out for the channel it has a free 7 day trial. We enjoyed the series.
