My Random TV Thread

Started the second season of The Last Kingdom on Netflix. I thought it would be a ripoff of Vikings but it's pretty good.

The author the series is based on, Bernard Cornwell, I think writes really good historical fiction. It all follows essentially the same pattern - lowly non-historical figure in a historical setting becomes a great warrior and wins a place in historical events - but they're almost all very entertaining. I think that series is good, the Sharpe's rifles series is really good, and I loved his take on king Arthur.

For those looking to cut the cord, I recently discovered Kodi (formerly XBMC). There are a ton of add-ons for you to watch legal and..."extralegal" TV shows, movies, and music via your computer. It also has an app or two you that uses your smart phone as a remote. I'm going to build an HTPC around the program, maybe even play with some case mods. Anyway, it is worth a look.

I'm about to do exactly that and get rid of satellite TV. Tired of being ripped off when most of the time, there's nothing to watch that Ican't find online.

Knocked out 'Iron Fist', the latest Marvel offering on Netflix. I've watched all the other Marvel/Netflix collabs and they did a great job of tying all the other running narratives into this show while still making it feel unique. I would say it's right up there with Daredevil, and definitely better than Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. Choreography was good while still having a comic book feel. Story was well thought out and kept me interested every episode.

GTFO! Those are very good shows but I'll have to check out Iron Fist.

I really liked Jessica Jones too, but thought DareDevil and Iron Fist were better. Luke Cage started off embarrassingly weak on a few different fronts, but around episode four or five it started to shape up a bit. I think it's the weakest offering of the Netflix/Marvel slate, but still have high hopes for season 2.

Luke Cage is as good as daredevil IMO. Maybe it's the music but I love that show and the acting is great. Also that tracking shot with Wu Tang made the whole show for me.

I had been watching Kodi on a jail broken firestick for a few months and loved it! I never worked out how to update it though, which was becoming a serious problem.

Ultimately I didn't like Luke Cage or Jessica Jones that much - but I'm with you on the Wu Tang-themed takedown of the drug house. That scene made the series for me.

Binged on Rick and Morty and watched both seasons in a week (hence the avatar change). I prefer Season 2 but the entire show is great, just my kind of humor. The sequence with King Jellybean in "Meeseeks and Destroy" made me cry laughing because it's so hilarious but incredibly dark.

I really enjoyed Legion on FX. Definitely a different take on the superhero genre - much more of a show that just takes place in that universe. Still, really exceptional storytelling and characters.

Also, on Netflix the documentary series '5 came back' is phenomenal. If you like film history and/or WWII history it is a must-see. One of the best documentaries I've seen this year. I think WWII history buffs on the site like @AWP will love it.

Black Sails wrapped up this week. The ending was a bit more upbeat than I expected, but very good. It was a solid end to a great series which did a wonderful job of blending Treasure Island with history.

I'll need to check that out. Thanks for the heads up.

My wife got me into watching "Big Little Lies" on HBO and it's the bees knees.

Ridiculous cast (Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Zoe Kravitz, Reese Witherspoon and others), great writing, great acting. It's well worth the watch or the $7.95 for the HBO Go app for the month.
