Watsup shadowspear. Found this website while perusing for information about marsoc. ANYWAYS....
I am a member of the navy reserve in the Nashville area of Tennessee, and I am intelligence specialist. I have been in the navy for a little bit under a year, and so far it is a love/hate relationship. But who knows, hopefully in the near future I will finally get to spend some time in the box before this war passes me up entirely.

Welcome to the site. A couple of things to consider.... 1) You really should not use your real name as your username. PERSEC and all that. 2) It's MARSOC, not marsoc and Navy, not navy. Attention to detail matters.

grammar nazi....

Olias isn't my real name. though I do see that my name is available. I'll change it.

You recognize the fact that we require that proper grammar is used yet you still fail to do so. You're not off to a solid start.

My advice would be to concentrate on becoming a Marine first. Your time in the Navy doesn't mean anything to the Marine Corps. You will still have to attend Recruit Training as well as Infantry Training Battalion etc before applying for MARSOC. You will also have to spend at least 2 years in a different MOS before you can make a lateral move. Unless things have changed in the past year.

Why not try out for NSW? Why MARSOC?

NSW definitely gets the best missions. MARSOC is an up and coming unit that is still having the kinks worked out of it, though a few SEALs I have spoken too all speak highly of MARSOC operators. I'm not worried about which unit vs. the merits of the others really. It's more like if anything happens in training and I have to wash out, which service would I be happier to be in. So far, the Navy hasn't been terrible but I know I probably shouldn't have been in such a rush to join otherwise I am fairly certain I would have been a Marine. I don't regret experience at all however. It's definitely given me a realistic view of the military. Really, I don't desire the title and trident so much as I desire to do their job, if that makes sense.

Also, as far as my time not mattering to USMC, that isn't necessarily true. No matter what my rate is in the Navy, I will only get PFC out of boot, unless meritoriously advanced, and those aren't just handed out. However, time served in the Navy still counts toward time in service.

YOU made your choices, YOU have to live with them. Be careful what you want, you just might get it. Oh, always have contingencies, failure/injury/lack of intestinal fortitude are always options.

So far, you're not painting a very good picture of yourself. I will reserve welcoming you until you wholly change my opinion of your whininess and inability to accept your choices.

Yes, I made a decision. A rushed decision, which I have to live with. For the moment. That doesn't mean live with forever. I love being in the military. It beats the hell out of civilian work anyday, I am just trying to position myself in a way to where I can be most beneficial to the military while getting maximum job satisfaction.

People do interservice transfers all the time. If a person is suited to a different mission, that's what these systems are in place for.

What I am saying here is that I am just trying to figure what my next move is, career-wise. As far contigencies, I completely agree. But as a verified SOF, you should know, there are as many people who get cut for other things other than intestinal fortitude.

Why not transfer to one of the Reserve SEAL teams as a support guy? Everyone needs a good targeteer.

That is definitely something I am considering. Since I have a sign on bonus I have to do intel for a little while anyway. A SWCC guy in my current unit told me about IS billets opening up for SEAL team 18, so if I can get attached to a SPECWAR unit as an IS, that would be awesome. He told me had has great respect for the good ISs and that I would benefit from time in the box, so hopefully I can deploy next year. In the meantime I have to transfer to an intel unit that is out of state...ouch. In the interest of OPSEC, I'll leave out where I am going.

Grammar nazi? Hardly. If I really wanted to be a grammar nazi I could have also pointed out that you said "I am intelligence specialist" as opposed to "I am an Intelligence Specialist", the fact that you failed to capitalize "Reserve", and your use of "watsup shadowspear" as an opening line. It is not difficult to use proper grammar. If you want to be a professional, then act like one. Communication is a part of that. Attention to detail matters.

I was not talking about the use of "Olias".

Hmm...I'm at a loss for words. You're not representing the USN very well...

Sorry y'all. I didn't mean to offend via typo. I just wanted to find a community where I could discuss ideas and such. Sooo...

There's plenty of leads here and some good information, hope you stick around, welcome.

Young man - your whole "less than one year" in the Navy appears to have made you an expert on all things military, enough of an expert that you feel you need to argue with and correct people who are attempting to guide you. This could possibly not be the forum for you since we don't cave to the needs of a barely rated Seaman - 6 months of your time has been spent in Boot Camp and A School... which means, with training breaks/leave you have about 4 months in your job... I bet you originally thought you were going to be some kind of high speed double naught spy, and now you are collecting commo/data in a darkened room and that's not quite cool enough for you. Sorry - tough crap - fulfill your enlistment/obligation, then change jobs. Intelligence is a much needed area of expertise in all areas of SOF... use that to become an asset - but remember - the big enlistment bonus means that it is an in-demand skill, you wanted the $$$, and it's not free, it costs time.

So read the above 5 times, then suck it up buttercup - be the best you can be at the job you originally chose, accepted an enlistment bonus for and now feel is beneath your mad skillz. You have whatever the rest of this enlistment is to figure out where you want to be... use it and be an asset by doing that job well.

NOW, STFU and move out. I wish SAWMAN read and posted on intros, he'd probably read you the riot act also.

Welcome to the site. If your username is your real name and you want to change it, let me know.

The original poster contacted me via PM and asked for his username to be changed to Olias. I also took the opportunity to explain some of the finer points of site etiquette and the consequences if he doesn't adapt. I'm closing this thread and giving him the opportunity to learn from his initial mistakes, with the caveat that if he steps on it again, it's "game on."
