Retention and Recruitment Crisis

I don't mind Chelsea boots. I never owned a pair and probably never will. I retired before the wear-out date of the blues as the standard fancy uniform for the Army and never got the browns. I always thought that a pair of nicely shined jump boots looked good with any Army dress uniform.

I wear a pair when I go Cowboy Action Shooting...

Super comfortable - and the pair I have look just like Cowboy Boots until you pull the pants leg up enough to see the entire boot.
...I can even wear my spurs with them

I have another pair - not unlike the ones Weimer was wearing - that I occasionally wear to work and they look just like dress shoes until your pants leg rides up high enough to see them.

I wonder if a pair of Chelsea boots made out of desert tan suede would look good with multicams ???
...its something the Army should at least look at !!!

We all know that "somebody" asked for these uniform changes.
...we don't know who "they" are - but we know "they" asked for it

"They" are always asking for uniform changes...
...I hate these OG 107s we should have cammies
...I hate these cammies - we should have something with better material
...we need a desert uniform
...I hate these chocolate chips they look stupid
...these sugar cookies look stoopid too
...we need to replace this pattern
...this new digital pattern looks stoopid we REALLY need to change it
...why are we changing patterns?
...we should get multicams
...I like scorpion/w2 better
...what about OCP
...fuck that, I'm buying Patagonia; nobody will know the difference
...well, I'm gonna buy from Crye
...why can't we all get tiger stripes like the air force?
...I like MARPAT better
...we should have picked Kryptek
...these PT shorts are chaffing my balz
...these zip up hoodies suck, lets just buy team PTs

"standards"

Was over at Pearl Harbor the other day while I was on vacation. You had a female PO2 whose hair was too short to be in a bun or even a pony tail that was incredibly unkempt working the the ferry to the Arizona memorial. Like it was a forest but going to the four winds.

My old roommate is stationed at Schofield and we stayed with his family for a few days (easily saved us 1500 bones) and he was telling me about how it's essentially impossible to enforce standards around hair and nail polish on female Soldiers and female NCOs will rarely confront another female Soldier. A female officer will also rarely confront a female Soldier who is out of regs...but it's out of fear, not because they agree with that Soldier.

AF has gone that route too.

Current crop of "warriors" don't think standards matter.
Same group just destroyed an F-16, and damaged a F-15.

The next Task Force Smith will be brutal.

Now you're talkin.

way back in the day - when the military wasn't quite woke - when men were still the only ones that had a dick - when only women could get pregnant - when self righteous general officers and virtue signaling members of the admiralty generally stayed in the shadows - we had standards...

Infantry - (including the ones from the 75th) had high and tights - they all wore the same boots - and they all knew that shenanigans carried the penalty of consequence

Now - we are aware - we talk about political implications and social reactions when we talk about military discipline - we have women that are afraid of correcting women because they are afraid that the women will accuse them of treating them without dignity and respect - we worry that maybe women can have dicks too - we know that warriors need to leave the battlefield for weeks on end because the wife had a healthy baby with no complications - but the warriors still needs to be home to provide "support
...we are more aware of how important clothing is - how important it is to tend to our self image - how important it is to recognize that maybe men really CAM get pregnant
...and not even the two senior most leaders in the Army can show up at a very public event dressed the same
...we cant get 36 enlisted people to show up for PT in the same formation wearing the same clothes

"Heartbreak Ridge" was almost prophetic.
The real leader comes to town and sees that his warriors cant even figure out what fucking T-shirt to wear every morning
The fucking "combat leaders" that "came over from supply logistics" spend their waking moments building an "EEE-lite fighting force" that cant fight their way out of a fucking mud puddle - cant even hit water if they fell out of a boat...
...but at least we care about self image

Life imitates art - when all Captain Stillman worried about was the image of his men - they fucking injured SFC Hulka, got in trouble with the MPs, stole an armored truck, and caused an international incident
...and his ass ended up in Alaska

When Gunny highway showed up and started putting foot-to-ass with regard to his band of delusional heroes - they fucking cleaned up their act - kicked ass on the battlefield - and even started reenlisting.

I'm not sure why the article would mention this:
reduce the number of evaluated hikes with combat loads from six to three, and remove passage of the Combat Endurance Test from the list of graduation requirements
...just a few sentences after trying to pretend that the standards are equal and haven't changed.

These aren't the droids you're looking for.

They are equal, and they have changed. I think it was more of an effort to address male attrition since males still comprise 99.98% of infantry officer slots. It just happened to help the females, too.

I am not defending what they did, I just understand why they did it.

If they dropped the requirement from 6 graded ruck marches, to three graded ruck marches, and then eliminated a pass or fail endurance test - all in an effort to lower the attrition rate, then it doesn't matter to me WHAT gender they are discussing - what they have really done is compromise a standard.

If that standard was artificially elevated PURELY so that women couldn't readily pass - then there is a different discussion to be had.

But when the standard has been cut by over half of its previous performance level - and now women are routinely passing - then the article claiming that the standard hasn't changed is simply untrue.
The standard has been lowered.
...was it lowered so women could pass?
I dont know.
Was it lowered so that everyone could pass?
I dont know that either.
Is the standard lower than it used to be.
Yes. I'm going with yes - Final Answer.

The standard may be "equal" but the word "equal" has been diluted. Which only makes sense since most of us on this board have already agreed that "standards" is a word equally diluted by todays culture.

Seems like there should be at least a few sentences in that article about chelsea boots and new PT uniforms.
