Super Sweet Movie Discussion Thread

On vacation and its Spooktober right now so diving into the horror movie genre. Started off with The Ritual, and I'm gonna have to give it a hard pass. It tries to emulate movies like The Wickerman (the original), Midsommar (and other Folk Horror) as well as a little bit of The Blair Witch Project.

While at the same time missing what makes those movies actually enjoyable. The acting is pretty flat throughout I feel especially with the lead (Jack? Jake? I've already forgotten and I literally just watched the damn thing.) and you get a buildup throughout the movie asking will they make it out? Will they survive? With zero payoff in the end. I'm cool with cliffhangers but there needs to be an obvious build to a sequel, this just pulled a Soprano and cut to black.

4/10 and as the French say, des ordures.

the monster was cool tho

I really enjoy when directors try to reproduce horror movies along this angle, since there is so much untapped material in regional folklore to work with that flows so well into horror.

Midsommar was a fun trip. I appreciated the attention to detail and refusal to soften the more visceral elements of some real pagan practices for the audience. It was also funny seeing William harper as one of the backpackers - I kept expecting him to have Chidi moments throughout the film, though I suppose he did when he started getting suspicious.

I enjoyed The Witch more, thematically, but I felt there were better ways they could have ended the movie on an ominous note than that.

The original Wicker Man is one I've sorely neglected watching, so I'll try to squeeze it in soon.

Seems my gut was right on this one.

If you're looking for more suggestions, 'The Invitation' was an unexpectedly good film with less of a supernatural bent. Do not read any reviews or anything about the movie to avoid important spoilers - just start watching it on Netflix.

The Haunting of Bly Manor (unrelated storyline 'sequel' to The Haunting of Hill House series) so far is also good, if slower-paced than the first season.

That was the perfect ending to that series!!!
I will fight anyone that wants to throw down on this stance.
I drifted away when the series was airing back when Meadow started dating the Jewish black kid and Ralphie became a capo. After so many years (and not knowing a lick of why people didn't like the ending), I finally got around to watching it all from start to finish earlier this year.

... I searched and watched multiple clips of the very last scene online before realizing it wasn't a recording glitch on Netflix and it was designed that way.

Yeah, count me in on that fight. Even if I can see from a narrative standpoint that there's a strong argument for it being the most sensible ending, those directors will never be forgiven.

Fuggedaboudit, I am still pissed. :ROFLMAO:

I'll say though during this watch I noticed the series had a very unsettling, almost supernatural undertone to it, especially with his dreams. I got the feeling his mom was literally trying to kill him from the grave.

@Locksteady

Totally agree on the lack of films (or at the very least semi main stream) dealing with regional folklore, or even more specifically Scandinavian or even Russ, the late 60's and early 70's were essentially that genre's heydey (but we are seeing a resurgence with the likes of The Witch and Midsommar) I recommend Blood on Satan's Claw and The Witchfinder General (as well as the OG Wickerman) they're the mainstays and often the goto for the genre to introduce people. Prepare for weird and definitely unsettling. I haven't actually seen The Witch yet, but I'll get around to it this week. However, I ABSOLUTELY FUCKING LOVED THE INVITATION, I had forgotten about it but once you mentioned it brought everything back to me. An absolutely fantastic movie and definitely hits all my favorite buttons. I enjoyed Midsommar in the sense that it's been one of the few movies that have given me a visceral reaction in the sense of "what in the fuck kind of journey did I just go on", that's not meant in a bad way though.

Something along the lines of The Invitation but more in the dark comedy thriller area, Cheap Thrills is a fun time, avoid reviews because there are twists in it but I'd say along the lines of The Invitation (and no not in the spoiling it way).

@GOTWA Hocus Pocus is required watching in my house during October.

Outpost dropped today on Amazon...haven't watched it yet. Based on the book " The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor by Jake Tapper about the Battle of Kamdesh."

EDIT: You can rent it from Amazon...it's on video on demand..so various outlets.

It just got a cinema release here, I watched it the other day. Not too bad.

CLUB DREAD is about as scary as I can go.....

8-) :ROFLMAO: O_o

If you liked that, Netflix just put out Hubie Halloween, has a ton of actors you'd know in it ( Adam Sandler, Kevin Smith, Steve Buscemi, Ray Liotta, Shaq, etc. etc.)

Not a "horror" movie by any means, but definitely a fun and entertaining Halloween themed movie, if I really had to describe it, I'd say imagine if Super Troopers and Hocus Pocus had a baby on Halloween. It's one to watch with the family.

Thanks for the INTEL....I'll crush this after I slowly catch up on my honeydo list!

I doubt it gets more than 5 stars on IMDB, but it was an okay watch. Always liked Julie Bowen.
Stands about here in my book too. Bobby Boucher and Special Officer Doofy (Scary Movie)'s lovechild was quite a mix.

Maybe a six given that and the small ensemble of comics.
