Super Sweet Movie Discussion Thread

Spent a solo afternoon watching Superman in IMAX. It was the best superhero movie done in a very long time. Easy to suspend belief for a while as they made it as true to the comics as they could. I might go see it again with my daughter.

Then watched Ballerina at home with the wife. Zero belief because she would have been dead countless times over. But it was a good mindless shooting and fighting movie.

It's interesting that I'm hearing so many good things about Superman. I was going to give it a pass based on the uber-woke promotions I've read, but now I'm reconsidering.

I honestly didn't notice anything overtly woke. I think this is just backlash against Gunn for his Superman is an immigrant comment. Frankly, he meets the definition, even illegal immigrant but he did have a counterfeit Kansas birth certificate.

I was impressed with the quality of production and character development, even "minor" cameos.

When I watch a comic book/ Sci-fi movie or TV show I want to be entertained. That said, when people complain about a character's conduct and personality I have to ask if that stays true to the original material or at least the intent. I generally have a problem with creating a story from 2-3 or more books, but that's the norm these days.

Superman was created by Jews who fled Hitler. If the original had a left slant I wouldn't be surprised.

DC Comics in the 2010s went woke.
Dude, most super hero comics have been "woke" since the beginning.

Superman was created by Jews who fled Hitler. If the original had a left slant I wouldn't be surprised.

I do think its hilarious that a character who's core "human" features are overwhelming compassion and kindness, is often accused of being "left" if the story has any sort of conflict of those principles.

So the writer for this Movie brought back the original motto for SuperMan which was 'Truth, Justice, and the American Way'.

DC Comics in the 2010s went woke.

Here’s How Superman’s Iconic Motto of ‘Truth, Justice and the American Way’ Evolved Over Time

Comics change or evolve to suit their target demographic? Isn't that how business works?
----

Kind of wild for all of us in general to get worked up over a woke comic book character. Wonder Woman walks around looking like a stripper and flies an invisible jet. Lois Lane (1938) and Supergirl (1959) were feminists before anyone even heard of the term. Random radioactive spiders and spills, blind dudes who "see" better than anyone on the planet, characters like Lois Lane and Kingpin suddenly becoming superheroes through aforementioned radiation exposure. We cheer the Punisher who is out breaking most laws known to man, and I could go on.

They are comic books created by people to entertain and turn a profit. To turn a profit. Make money, get paid.

Now that I think about it, I feel stupid for even being in this discussion.

Wait! Are the smurfs real? Is GI Joe better than Delta? If I'm smart enough and have billions of dollars I can use scrap metal to build a nuclear-powered bulletproof rocket suit in a cave AND program an AI more capable than anything on the planet because coding is that easy?

Whoa!

I think every story I have seen mirrors your read of it- "Thought it was gonna be woke, wasn't, good movie."

I am still not gonna watch it because I have a 16 month old who is a feral chaos machine, and 120 minutes of "free time" simply doesn't exist. Let me know how you like it.

My kids are 14-23 and I still don't have "free time." It's been years since I stepped into a theater that was not with the kids (Marvel, Star Wars, etc.).

Some places like Landmark have showtime just for people with ankle biters. I think they call it "park the stroller" with lights up and lower volume. Some even have carts with diapers and wipes, of you need them.

Equalizer 2, just goes to show I have no idea why Pedro Pascal is in all these flicks right now because it's clear Denzel is him.

Pascal is a good actor, but punching out of his weight class right now. That said, I saw an interview with a big name English actor (I forget who. Guiness? Christopher Lee?) who was questioned about why he took roles in bad movies. His response was something to the effect of "I'm an actor and that's what we do: act." Is Pascal doing this? Maybe, but it's more like Hollywood is throwing roles at the dude because he's a box office draw.

Pascal is overrated.
