Well Roosevelt nominated Pershing to Brigadier in 1906. And presidents seem to get what they want.
Pershing was appointed to lead the expedition against Pancho Villa, and then appointed commander of the AEF all over higher ranked and "qualified" individuals.
Being a COCOM Commander doesn't make someone a good CJCS. Being a COCOM Commander apparently makes shitty SECDEFs though.
Consider this: you’re a federal employee. You’re a professional who enjoys your job. You put in decent work.
On a Saturday afternoon, you hear about some stuff going on in your work group chat. The Tesla guy, who has been shit-talking you for months, woke up from his K hole and fired off a tweet threatening to fire you if you don’t complete some trivial task. You’re used to dumb tasks coming from bosses. It’s not especially unusual.
But you don’t work for the Tesla guy. You’ve already got 15 layers of oversight, and he’s not a part of any of them. Not to mention he’s been tweeting 600 times a day that you, personally, are a lazy sack of shit and deserve to get fired.
Oh, and after all that, the ACTUAL agency head you DO work for instructs not to do the trivial task. Very cool. You love to see it, folks
To sum it up, I think there would be considerably less resistance to this if: 1) it came from literally anyone other than Elon Musk, 2) there was at least some attempt made to conceal the naked contempt this administration has for its federal workers

Its not like any of us worked to get one of these low work/high pay government jobs.
We certainly don't deserve to have them.
In fact, I'd like to offer an open apology to the American people for taking so much of their money when I do so little.
I aplogize for the amount of avarice and greed that my shitty attitude brings to the table.

I know my company was targeted because of a belief that we were conservative. We were debanked by Chase, our satire site got taken down by Facebook for sharing a political meme that was clearly a joke, and our page views plummeted from a couple hundred thousand a month to a couple thousand. All because we dared feature some "conservative" content IN ADDITION TO our progressive content.
I'm glad to see that companies are being called to account for this behavior and I'd love to have some accountability for what happened to us.
